Thought i'd make a small possible pouch, then I thought i'd use it for a fire kit, then I thought I'd make a small knife. Cabin fever is getting to me:D
It's snowing again:(
Dyed Moose hide, small White tail crown, tip of an old carbon steel KABAR boning knife, fire steel with an antler tip handle. The kit will include a tinder bag with chopped jute and lots of wonderful fatwood.
Best regards

Robin

amazing, i never thought about it before but rather than get kindling and moss bits in the rest of my gear, a fire pouch is an awesome idea, its getting added to the list! Looks great!

Hi there Survival
I use jute cord cut into 1 inch pieces and unravelled until it's fluff and then wrap it around fine slivers of fatwood, it lights up in one strike of the rod.
I LOVE fatwood.

i will definitely look into it, being a contributing member of other forums for a long time, i can say this one is one of the best, i am looking forward to posting some hawks shortly. The fire steel can be frustrating, not alot of materials will take the spark as readily as the waiting girlfriend would have you like it to haha... how do you identify and gather fatwood? I did some research but would love to hear what you have to say

Fat wood as you have likely found out comes from white pine and long leaf yellow pine, not sure about red pine. However, being in Edmonton could be a problem soooooo, Canadian tire sells fatwood as a camp fire starter:D, I think it's called "instant start" or something like that. I think it's 7 bucks for enough to start fires for years. I'm just trying to get a couple of sheath orders in the mail but watch this thread later today and I'll post pics of what I do to light instant fires. The girlfriend will be happy with your speed and ability :D

Hi Survival
Here are some pics of the way I light a fire with fatwood and jute fuzz. I have a small board as you can see with a small area dug out and a hole for the fire rod. I cut about 2 inches of jute off and unravel it into a fuzz, the wrap the small slivers of fatwood with the fuzz, then strike. The slivers will burn for a good minute, a match stick size piece of fatwood will burn for 2 to 3 minutes. I then use birch bark and the small kindling.
Hope this helps.

Regards

Robin
