A compass for my 82-year old mom

Greetings!

I am looking for a compass for my 82-year old mother. We were talking this morning and I realized that she has mentioned many times that since moving to Oklahoma, she has not been able to tell directions. So I suggested a compass and she likes that idea.

The compass I have in mind, but don't know if it exists, would be:

1. Preferably under $25
2. Basic NSEW
3. Fairly reliable
4. Attached to a carabiner or could be attached to a carabiner

My mom typically wears levis and tennis shoes. She has a carabiner watch she hooks on a belt loop. I would like for her to be able to hook the compass on another belt loop.

She isn't going to be doing any sighting, etc. She would just like to know which direction is N, E, S, or W.

Many of the affordable compass reviews I have read have had negative comments about the compasses not being reliable. I'm not asking for rocket science, just basic directions. She isn't going to be taking any hikes by herself where she might get lost.

Thanks.

Judy

I just read one guy's review for the Silva Lensatic 360 Compassa compass, and I like what he said - which pretty much is the idea for what I want to get for my mom:

"The W points in the direction of where the sun sets in my backyard, and it points to E where the sun rises in my front yard, so the accuracy is good enough for me."

I like the Suunto A-10 Compass or A-10 Partner II Compass. They got good reviews.

I've always been a Silva fan and both carry and use their compasses regularly. Take a look at this: http://www.silva.se/products/outdoor/metro-pink

If I'm being stereotypically girly in the colour choice, please forgive me.

Good luck in your quest,

Randy

Randy,

I love it!!! It is not far from the color I just painted an accent wall in my living room. Seriously. My mom is pretty much a girly-girl, in levis. Hey, isn't there a song, "Venus, in blue jeans?" Well, at 82 she's not a Venus, but she's still a girly-girl!

I'm going to check it out. I appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into the suggestion for my mom.

Update: I just placed the order for the Metro Pink Compass. The total, including shipping, came in under $25 US. Awesome. This could not have been more perfect. NSEW, Carabiner, and Pink! Color was optional. I love the pure simplicity of this compass. My mom has short-term memory loss, and can get confused and/or overwhelmed if something appears too technical. I know she is going to be receiving compliments on this compass, and there probably won't be anyone who will have seen this particular compass where she is. AND... this makes another SCORE for another perfect gift from her #1 daughter! Thanks again, Randy!!!

Clang!

Thanks for the thought! It just worked out that the first response was EXACTLY what I was looking for - I didn't even think it was possible.

I looked it up and that solution looks just fine to me.

Should it be necessary, the Suuntos are very solid compasses. Extremely reliable.

Thanks, Jamie.

I was leaning towards a Suunto, until Randy turned me on to the Silva Metro. The simplicity of the Silva Metro (not the pink color) is what cinched my choice.
