A cool knife for my new son

Hey all,
My son was born this year in June. I want to raise him right, a knife knut like this Dad, Granddad, and two uncles. I'm looking for a knife that is significant for this year, most likely a design or something that this is the only year they will make it. Then I would give it to him someday on a day of celebration or when he might need a little pick-me-up from life. I was thinking of the Case Wharncliffe Mini Trapper Stars and Stripes, their knife from the SHOT show this year. Does anyone have one of these and can provide their thoughts on it? I was curious if it came with a paper or said something on the box that explains its significance for this year.

Also, does anyone have any other knife suggestions?
Thanks!

When my son was born I wanted to do the same thing. In my search I found out about gec's serial numbered knives that come with a certificate of authenticity. After searching their site I found out they actually released 2 knives on the exact day my son was born so of course I bought one of each. :) These are actually the very knives that converted me to a traditional knife nut & GEC collector.

Congratulations on being a dad HR

Great idea JKU, those are truly special knives

Another idea might be to try and snap up one of this year's forum knives on the exchange :)

No offense to the knife members here, but make the decision yourself. I think it would be that much more special instead of someone else's recommendation.
Plenty of nice knives to choose from out there and it shouldn't be that tough of a decision.

Hey cards94 did you read the last sentence of the original post? No offense to you but the whole idea of the forum is sharing of ideas and information.

Jake we've talked at length off forum about those knives. Great idea.

HR83 I dig the post. I have a couple of knives set aside for my son and daughter. Most are ones they have picked themselves from my collection. I have since bought others based on the preferences they've stated. I am creating my own narrative and tradition in my family that will hopefully be passed down to future generations. However you do it I'm sure it will be fine. :D

Well, any CASE knife has its day of manufacture on the box, so it could be an idea to see if you can get a knife with his actual birthdate? Provided of course he didn't appear during the week-end.....

Or do as jk did, find out from GEC if certified knives were made on your son's birthday. I'm sure he'll be really pleased to have ANY knife made on his day and set aside specially for him, very thoughtful loving gesture I must say.

Thanks, Will

As a son, my most valuable possessions given by my father are the things he carried and used. Along those lines the knife I plan to hand down to my son(s) will be the one I use and love- a GEC #33 conductor.

However, since I appreciate that getting a new knife from Dad is one of the best things in life, I also bought duplicates of the one I have so that they each can have one to make their own.

So your answer is to buy at least two knives, sorry! :)

I would think a knife that would last for generations to come. Folders are nice, and can last very long, but when I think of passing a knife down to my son, I think fixed blade. That's a tool that can last for many generations.
My matching pair of Kyle Hanson customs are going to be first on the list to go to Jr. Along with a bunch more I'm sure.

For his birthday last year, I gave my son a Case trapper that was made in the year of his birth, 1974. This year, for their birthdays, I gave each of my grandsons a Case Trapper made in the year of their birth, 1997 and 1999, so I think it's a splendid idea you had there. Brilliant minds think alike.:D

I appreciate everyone's input. The GEC serial knife is a great idea and I'm going to look into that.

I know he won't ever be hurting for knives. My dad is a big collector and except for some he has set aside for my brother and his other grandson, they are coming to me. My brother just doesn't have the knife knut gene like I do and has actually lost several sentimental knives that my dad gave him. I've got my own collection and I'm sure they will go to my son some day (there can't be anymore kids with us).

I mainly just wanted to find one that was new and significant for this year and give him some day and not necessarily be passed down with the collection. Something to just be fun or when I thought he may need it someday. I've been having a rough year and my dad recently gave me his dad's knife, I think to just give me a pick me up. He had planned to leave it to me, but wanted me to have it now. I never met my Grandpa and he couldn't afford to collect knives, so it was literally one of the few knives he still had. This is a large stockman Queen knife, obviously used hard and sharpened so often over many years that you can't distinguish for sure what the original blade shape was. I love it.

Thanks for all the input!

I got lucky and did this very thing fit my daughter when she was born. It only took me seven dealers and three months too. Start looking now. The longer you wait, the harder it's going to be.

Few days old, coming home from the hospital. No knife found yet.

GEC serial knives are an alternative, as are the Case calendar series.

I had the same desire when I found out I was going to be a Grandpa for the first time. I'm Ronnie the 2nd named after my Father. My oldest son is the Ronnie the 3rd. My new grandson (due in February) will be Ronnie the 4th.

I managed to get all three of these GEC Northfield Calf Ropers in sequential order. Obviously I have #2, my oldest son #3, and the grandson will get #4 when he's old enough.

I always imagine my grandson 50-60 years from now when my son and I are both gone, looking at #2 from me and #3 from his dad, and then reaching into his pocket and pulling out his own #4.

Good luck on your quest.

Brian, you can see what a power of good a knife does for the growing process, both physical and mental with a kid! :D Congratulations:thumbup:

Thanks, Will

This is a very heart-warming thread, and I truly appreciate the sentiments expressed here! Super pictures, Brian  My daughter was 25 and living in Spain by the time I got re-interested in pocket knives, and she just rolls her eyes when my knife enthusiasm shows through in our Skype conversations. She doesn't seem to have much interest, but she'll eventually inherit a knife (or several) anyway :D Maybe I'll accidentally leave a Vic Classic with her when I visit Madrid this Christmas …
