I've given up the idea of re-building till the summer. I did make alittle room in the garage but still don't have much for tools but have been thinking alot about getting a grinder. I've been doing alot of forging and I'm set up now where one of my anvils is inside the garage and the forge is just outside the main door. Its working out pretty good and feeling pretty happy. I've been working on an idea for a close quarter hawk trying to keep it as small as possible and still be effective. Was shooting for 5" overall but 6" is what I've been able to come up with. Here's a look at the first two heads out of four tries that I'm happy with. I've still got a little tweking to do.

I like em. glad to hear you're gettin back on your feet so to speak.
what technique do you use on your hawks? like do you use the chisel method or the old wrap-it-round-a-mandrel?

Alex, I make a slot with my drill press before I start forging. I drill a serries of holes and then clean it out with a carbide burr. Here's a picture of the slot.

so then i guess you just square up the handle to fit and put a wedge in it? also, why'd you choose this particular way to skin this cat? i don't think i'v ever seen it done this way before... im hopin to get myself a forge and an anvil sometime in the near(-ish) future, and i'd really like to start makin hawks, so i'm tryin to glean all i can in the mean time. :D thanks much.

Alex, I do the slot and then I do all the forging before I expand the eye with a drift. I do it this way because it works. I'll add a picture that has the drift and a sequence in which I used to do the hawks. It seems like everytime I do a hawk I learn something new so I'm always changing things. The system I'm doing now has gone threw many changes over the last 4 years or so.

glad to see you're up and going somewhat Ray :D

I like the 2nd of the first picture :)

Dan, That was the first one and I also like it better. I can't figure out why I didn't get more of a drop on the second one. The first one was out of 3/4" stock and the second one was out of 1" and both were the same length when I started forging. Someday I'll get things figured out. It sure feels good to be back making!
