Some might know of my obsession with the knives of George Herron (RIP). I developed the love for Georges' knives when I was a young boy. Dad would get (and still does) AG Russell catalogs in the mail, at that time, the old B&W catalogs (remember them?) That's where I saw my first Herron and fell in love !
Recently I got a request from a customer in Alaska to make a Herron style hunter. I jumped !!! I chose what would have been Georges model # 8 (~ 4" blade) with the handle style that I believe he used around the 70's. This one is 3/16" D2, Stabilized Carpathian Elm scales (from Chuck at Alpha) on a tapered tang, 416 stainless guard, stainless handle screws and has an ever so slight trailing point.
The other blade is a little Nessy. ATS34 with wssi stabilized Birdseye Maple (in chroma-brown) on a tapered tang. This is a really purdy knife and a style I'm falling in love with.
Pics leave much to be desired and don't at all do justice to the knives so......... don't judge too harshly
. They really are better than they appear in the pics
I hope you guys like em, cause you know what ? I sure love making them
Every single knife I make gets me out to the shop a bit earlier each day. When I walk out of the shop in the evening I can't wait until morning to get at it again. Many have warned me that, with all the hours I spend in my shop, I run the risk of burn out. But....... things have really changed for me in the few years I've been doing this (about 3-1/2 yrs now) Priorities have changed.
My life is now my work. In the past I never would have seen myself saying something like that. I sure hope my excitement and passion for knifemaking comes through, because ..... God, I love doing this
