I stumbled across a couple deals I couldn't pass up
I don't have any pics of the 15 in use but I played making feather sticks and a couple tarp pegs and the wife seems to be grabbing it for food prep she's really enjoying it
The 4 is lots of fun learning to use, I've found the sweet spots of the blade vary on what you're doing with it
Batoning I've found just getting the back edge of the front part of the blade on the edge of the wood makes for easy splitting
Chopping it seems to really like the middle of the blade, man does it dig in and send chunks flying
That pic was from a hike last week, for me I'll need to do something for the retention of the bottom of the sheath, it swung around too much for me, I secured it to my leg with some bankline I had with me and it was fine
We got a good amount of wet heavy snow which meant down branches and trees, sorry for the crappy cell phone pics but I seized a teaching opportunity for my daughter. She was up delimbing the bigger branches with the gerber gator on one of the pines that came down. My son and I finished up on the trees we were cleaning up, he went in because he was cold and I went up with the BK4 and 2 to give her a hand but she was done
I told her to tie a half hitch to the logs and the quad to make it easy in gloves and she didn't remember how. I noticed that the branches she had left were all wrist size or bigger. So I figured I'd teach her half hitches, which turned into you practice while I chop some, to lashing a tripod and having her lash a tripod and then make a bench all while wearing big bulky gloves
done taking turns chopping
a better pic would reveal the BK2 on the left and BK4 on the right and the bankline
Cheesy pics of me proving its safe and works
My daughter/assistant builder
All said and done it took 10 - 15 mins to make the bench and I've caught her a few times practicing the half hitch which is awesome
She asked if we could make a fire with what we had around us / with us and I realized with my skill set the answer was no, we tried anyway and I couldn't get anything to catch a spark. This showed me I need to make sure I have some sort of tinder in with the BK2 sheath, the ferro rod is not enough for me in wet conditions and I'll need a similar fire "kit" for the BK4
The tree crew
The bench crew
All these guys were in use yesterday and since it was thanksgiving they gathered for a partial family photo
So far the 2 and the 11 are still my favorite but in fairness I need more time with the 4 and 15
