A couple new knives from Nicaragua

Here are a couple new blades from the vocational school in Nicaragua. The first was done by me. I forged it from a piece of 52/100 that I brought back from my last trip to the states. This was my first attempt at a leather/wood handle. As far as the guard and butt cap go, I know many folks think brass is tacky but we don't have many options here. Hopefully I'll find some better alternatives soon.

The second blade was forged by Ramon, one of the teachers in my school. He has really taken to bladesmithing ever since Jason Knight's visit last year. Ramon's blade was forged from 5160. The sheaths were both done by me.

Just wanted to share some of our work with you all and maybe get some critiques/feedback as well. I'll be performing some cutting tests in the days to come.

Thanks for looking.
Mike

The work you guys are doing in Nicaragua is truly commendable. Work like yours represents the best of the American spirit and the true way to achieve peace in the world. May God bless you.

I Like them. Particularly the blade profiles and nice work on the wood and stacked leather handle.
Yep, brass gets a bad rep but works on some knives IMO, even though you may have to spend 30 seconds cleaning tarnish off once in a while.

there is some nice Art in those knives!
Let me say how much I enjoy following your story. It's really great to know the genesis for all this, and to see the evolution in your knife making efforts.

I am really impressed by Ramon's blade shape, that came out wonderfully

yours is very nice but seems like the blade is to short for it's shape??? if that makes any sense.

Mike, those look great! I look forward to seeing you before Thanksgiving. I will have some guard material for you to take back. Bring some knives with you.

Jason

Thanks Guys. Your words are very encouraging and I will share with Ramon your comments. Having a place to display our work and get feedback is awesome. I follow BF all the time and really enjoy all the knives posted here. I learn something from each post and hope to improve all we do with the help of all who post here.

I agree with you Stephan. I too, was a little disappointed with my finished product. If I had to do it again, and I probably will, the blade would be another inch longer at least (for that particular shape).
Jason: See you soon. I will be bringing both of these knives with me so you can give them some close inspection.
