A couple of "Basic" questions

Hi everyone,

I've got a couple of questions about the Basic 8 LE that many of you with much more experience with the basic line may be able to help with.

First, does anyone know if any of the tang is exposed at the butt? I'm specifically wondering if it's reasonable to use a baton to drive the knife into something by striking the butt.

Second, has anyone batonned with a similar size basic series knife? I have a sykco 1311 which is a beast of a chopper, but it vibrates a lot when batonning.

Thanks in advance
Tim

*with the upcoming ganza I fully expect a multitude of posts advising me that I wouldn't like it anyways. :)

Hi Tim,

The tang is not exposed, but comes very close.

I have batonned the handles on my ResC blades quite a bit and it can cause some tearing to the material. Affects the aesthetics, but nothing structural. The smaller issues can be mended with a bic lighter.

I would guess that the vibration that you're feeling with the 1311 is due to both the thinness of that knife and the length. I don't expect much of that with the B8.

Hope this helps.

You won't like it. It's too fat, it's too skinny, it vibrates too much, and you can't hit the butt.

:D

No, the tang is not exposed at the butt, so there is some risk when striking it there. Member last visible canary (miss that guy) put up pics some time ago of a B9 with the butt split open because he had hammered on it to deal with some roots in a hole. One could always send it back to Busse for a handle replacement.

My thoughts, as well. The thicker, shorter stock of the B8 will be stiffer, and likely to carry less vibration.

Thanks guys,

I really appreciate the input.

That video is pretty intense! Watching the destruction test Noss used for the FFBM is what got me into Busse in the first place.

I was afraid your responses would remove any doubt about durability! At the last Ganza I had hoped to score a BIG ASH, but it didn't pan out. I was hoping the BIG ASH would be on the list for the Cupid Ganza; again no luck. Now I'm torn; take a shot at the B8, or cross my fingers that the BIG ASH makes an appearance soon.

The B8 looks to be very utilitarian, but the BIG ASH is calling my name.

Most of the Busse "help me choose" threads I've seen eventually get to "just get both". The more I think about it, the more I know what I'll be doing Tuesday night.

Thanks again
Tim
