Okay, I've been away from the forums for quite a while, so I thought I'd make this post a big one. Also, I want to share my joy of knives with everybody!
Okay, here's the first one. Jerry Hossom sent me this knife (which I dubbed "Spyke"), for a sheath many moons ago. I loved the knife, but it had two problems. #1, I was broke. #2, the handle didn't fit my hand. Here's a "before" pic:
Much to my surprise, when I showed up to the Blade show it was sitting on Jerry's table. I also met Neil Blackwood (Dr. Lathe) at Jerry's table as well, and a little light went on. I'd admired Neil's handle treatments for a while, so I asked him if he could put a handle on the Spyke, and so it went. After some quick horsetrading and swapping around, I managed to get my hands on the Spyke, sent it to Neil, and this was the result:
Jeweled anodized titanium handle slabs with a deep navy blue cord wrap. He also contoured the handle to fit my thick hands. I had to modify the sheath a little, but these two fine men (Hossom and Blackwood) are artists of the first order.
Now, if that weren't enough, I had another cool knife experience that came to fruition earlier today. Bob (Couteaux on the forums) had me do some concealex work for him. We got writing back and forth, and I found out he does leather work and refinishes knives. I had an old beater knife (a Cold Steel Trail Master) that my wife gave me as a Christmas present years ago. I always hated both the handle and the sheath on the knife, not to mention the terrible staining from a very poor blueing job I did on it. This knife has a great deal of sentimental value, so I asked Bob if he coud take the square kraton handle off and refinish the blade. He said he could, so I shipped it off.
First, however, I made a 2" concealex sleeve for the Trail Master to make a HYBRID sheath. In other words, a sheath that has the retention of concealex, but is as easy on the knife as leather. Best of both worlds, so to speak. A Waxy/Couteaux collaboration.
This is the result:
and
The blueing looks uneven in the second picture, but it isn't (it's just the oil on the blade). The HYBRID sheath works very well tucked in my waistband, and the second leather high-ride sheath puts the knife at a perfect angle for belt carry.
Now, if that weren't enough, I found out that the copper butt cap came from a plate salvaged by Bob's father many years ago from the Queen Mary before it was turned into a hotel (when it was docked at long beach). It has a series of grooves cut into it from the heavy machinery that used to rest on the plate. Bob did a nice job of polishing and smoothing it, leaving enough of the marks behind to tell that they were once there.
This knife, which always had sentimental value, now has even more!
Jerry, Neil, and Bob, thank you all very much!
Matt
