A couple of questions about lanyards

1-What's the purpose of the lanyards I see now that are a strip of 550 cord hanging from the handle. They aren't really a loop, just sort of a "tail" of 550 cord.

2-What's a good "breakaway" lanyard? I'd like one to keep track of a knife in the water, but if it gets caught on something I'm not that attached to my knives that I want to follow them to Davey Jones' locker. I'd prefer one with a fair amount of "reach" but don't want a bunch of cord dangling around. Maybe something elastic? Seems like this would also be a good way to avoid losing knives while gutting deer after dark. I have seen a few knives lost that way.

errr I still don't know what the little cord attached to the lanyard hole is for.

Obviously I know what a regular lanyard is for.

I do have a lanyard like this on my surefire lights.

You can release the light and reload a pistol (or do other suff), yet if someone grabs it it should, theoretically slide off your thumb without breaking it.

I could see the point of a tail type lanyard with a loop in the end that you can hook over a thumb, like this

I just don't get the tail without a loop ones, like this

This seems purposeless, except unless you're going to get lost with only your knife and plan on building a lean to with the paracord on your knife. Is there some other practical day to day use that I am missing?

1: Decoration
2: Ease of access
3: Filling the hand

For ease of access, I have personally found a little tail on a folder carried IWB makes it a lot easier to pull my knife out of the waistband.

I think some people also find that a fob on their knife provides a little more material to hold onto when using the knife; especially those people with bag hands and a knife that doesn't offer enough purchase for all digits to wrap around.

Actually, what you are referring to is called a "fob". Lanyards are loops, whereas fobs are the "tails" you are referring to. Fobs are also sometimes attached to key rings.

mikeymoto pretty much otherwise summed it up as to "why" when it comes to a fob.

on folders fobs help you draw the knife from the pocket faster, if its a tip up knife anyway, on a tip down they can increase the length of the knife to aid the grip and supply a small bit of cord for emergencies. and on some knives they just look cool,

they are anything but useless.
