a couple of questions about Tramontina machetes

I want to mod a couple of my machetes, but I have a couple of questions before I get started demolishing them, lol.

Can someone post a pic of the tang without the handle? I want to replace the wood handles with some g10 or micarta, but I want to make sure its within my abilities before I ruin the handles.

The second question is what should I do with a tram cane knife I have? Can anyone give me some inspiration? There's plenty of metal there to do something cool with, I'm just not sure which way to go.

Thanks

Cool. Thanks. I was afraid they would look something like that.

Now what to do with that cane knife .........

Afraid?

That's a pretty decent tang brother. If ya want you could get the big 24" and make your own with stock removal.

Its actually not too bad after looking at it again, I just won't. Be able to use the usual easy, slap a set of scales on and cut off the extra, but I have an idea to get it done.

Make your first one out of wood, or reshape the existing wood grips, then you'll have the hang of what you want before you start shaping micarta/G-10

Its not the shaping that I'm worried about. Its filling in where the tang isn't on the bottom / finger side of the handle.

My concern on at least one of the machetes is crap getting under the handle, as its going to see some duty breaking down game. Maybe I can take the handle off and put some epoxy in there to seal it up, then re-pin the handle on.

It's a $6 knife. Just put some epoxy in any visible gaps. If you're going to get a lot of blood on it, I'd seal the wooden handles with some polyurethane so they won't absorb the blood and stink later on.

yep, it's a cheap raw utility tool. The rusted one was one I lent out to some people down the street. They returned it a year later, apparently they had left it out under some bushes all winter. I took some of the rust off from the blade and ground and cooled it into a point- works fine for animals. Took the handle off it, and yeah, there's some rust. probably going to take the rust off, throw a handle on it and experiment. Either way, I'm very impressed with the raw utility you get from tramontinas- may be a good idea to have a BUNCH of them- especially when you can buy them wholesale for like 4 dollars.

Wow. And I still haven't modded any of my trams beyond giving them a small convex edge and rounding off the back end of one of the plastic handled ones that I have where it was making a hot spot.

I still want to re handle my 14" bolo, build a sheath for it to piggyback with a buck packlight(another good cutlery value), and do something cool with the cane knife.
