I need to stay away from antique stores. While waiting to meet up with a cousin who is visiting from abroad I found myself in an area full of bric-a-brac merchants. Rather than waste my time twiddling my thumbs or pecking at my phone I decided to do something productive and go for a walk amongst the musty, labyrinthine aisles.

I came away with this pair in hand.

The top one is a Camillus Sailor's knife. I've seen plenty of pictures of them before, but I never realized they were so big.

The smaller piece is one I'm very excited about. It's a William Rodgers and my first Sheffield-made knife. Carbon steel blades with stag covers, I think she'll make a nice gents knife as she is quite trim and unobtrusive.

I need to clean them up a bit, and as soon as I do I'll post up more pictures.

Two very nice finds Christian, congratulations :) Interesting to see how much the bail on the Camillus Sailor's Knife resembles the one on the British Admiralty 301. Look forward to seeing more of these two

Good score-the Camillus is said to be jigged rosewood. I have its brother.:)

Great Score Christian.
Is the Camillus a 4 stamp? Also the William Rogers - does it have the famous "I cut my way" or just the leather cutter symbol with William Rogers?

That Shadow Pen in Stag with sunk-joints is a very desirable find! Make a fine carry, congratulations!

Both are pretty cool. I always liked the fancy cut on that Camillus' bail flat.

However, like most that have posted, I am would love to see that Rogers opened up!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys.

I flushed out the rope knife with a bit of mineral oil. It stopped oozing black, so I think she'll be good to go now. It's incredible how the walk and talk on these old knives is restored with just a bit of cleaning.

This knife is nowhere near pristine. But the blade is full, the edge straight, and the point only minimally rounded. She's in great using condition.

Interesting to see how much the bail on the Camillus Sailor's Knife resembles the one on the British Admiralty 301.

I wish they were more similar. The 301s are beautifully made knives. These Camillus rope knives are like their poorer cousins.

:encouragement:

Is the Camillus a 4 stamp?

The stamp is indeed a 4 line.

The William Rodgers is in a much better state. It looks unused, and the blades look as if they have never touched a stone. The original finish remains intact, though there are signficant black spots on the blade. No matter. The blemishes make it that much easier for me to sharpen and drop it in my pocket.

Also the William Rogers - does it have the famous "I cut my way" or just the leather cutter symbol with William Rogers?

Thanks for that Duncan. It does indeed have the I CUT MY WAY stamp. I had trouble making out the motto until I read your post. Afterwards, clear as day.

Great scores, Christian!
The WR looks exquisite, with enough patina to certify it as real!!
Enjoy them both in good health!
And stay out of those antique stores!!

NOT!!!

Fantastic find! It's a good thing, these knives were found by someone who appreciates what they are!
