I am looking to make micarta handles for a blank that I own. I have 2 questions. can you reccomend a supplier THAT HAS A WIDE RANGE of pattern options? And also, is there a method to determining the blank thickness, or is that a personal thing? Thanks -Ben

USA Knifemakers has a lot of Micarta and similar products in many patterns.

If you mean the handle scales thickness, you get the thickness you need to make the handle the size you want (plus a tad for sanding). The average knife handle is between 1/2" and 3/4" thick. Of course, it depends on the type of knife and size of the blade. Most folks get 1/4" and 3/8" scales material. I use mainly 1/4".

Most first knives have handles that are far too fat. Take some measurements from a few kitchen and hunting knives to see what it should be.

I have taken a big cue from horsewright. His knives are *very* popular, and they are surprisingly thin. Take a look through the pictures he has posted for examples…
