A Couple of Virginia Game Wardens

In the 1980's - early 90's, The Virginia Game Warden Assoc. SFO'd annual knives to raise money for the organization. They were generally limited to 500 pieces. They didn't use Schrade exlusively, but ran the gamut from Buck to Case as well. They did however run the 1989 and 1990 editions through Schrade, and if I'm not mistaken possibly one or two others as well. Here are those editions, a 5OT and a 885UH done up in stag with some nice wood boxes to boot. I've included a copy of the "official" paperwork, as there is also the usual warranty card and care and usage sheet. Don't be aghast at our little blue/green friends on the 5OT stag:eek:, they've since been terminated:D
One seldom seen SFO feature on the UH is the presence of the usual knife number on one bolster, along with the total production number 1/500 on the other:

I had to keep the boxes on the paperwork to keep it from blowing away, the wind's been gusting to 50MPH today!

I do have a file on the Virginia Game Warden orders. The first I see is the 1988 7th edition, an LB5 with coined 24kt gold plated shield, blade etch, lasered box, green vac-tray (same as the 50DU tray without the duck-stamp pocket). As you stated, the order was for 500 pieces. These used the standard Fibron covers, but were brass bolstered ( standard production LB-5 had N.S. bolsters for the most part). Their number for the issue was VGC5. They were sent an actual badge to reproduce for the artwork. Frank Giorgianni converted the badge to line art.

The 1989 8th edition carried the item number of VGC6 and was the 885UH pattern with, as you know, burnt stag covers. The same die was used to produce the shielding for this issue as was used in 1988.

The 1990 9th edition was item number VGC7 and of the 5OT pattern, again with burnt stag covers.

The 2000 knife in the file is not for the Game Warden's Association. It is a PH2 (SDUPH2VG) for Virginia Fish & Game. There were only 100 of these ordered.

Nice pristine pair, Eric! A real treasure, and pleasure to view! Genuine stag!!

There is a LB5 (VGC5) from 88 $28.35
The 885 was VGC6 ordered in 1989 for august delivery $32.00
1990 was the VGC7 5OT $36.25
Abso-lut-ly beautiful.
Wish they were in my house.

It looks like that stockman is the same one they used on this NYKC Commemorative knife.

Thanks guys! Nice family tree there Thawk, sure does look the same. I'll try to get a couple more closeup pics up tomorrow, maybe one of the shield.

Michael and Larry, thanks for the additional info!:D

Got a couple more pics, the first is a close-up of the shield, which has an incredible amount of detail for something only 5/8'' long. The second is a shot of the back of the 5OT just to show the girth of the stag:

Very impressive shield! That type of detail could sell a lot of knives- hmmmm!
Those handles take the term "fat stag" to new heights! Incredible !!

Hal, is the NYKC Commemorative with stag, an 8OT pattern ? when did these come out ? did Mr. Williams do the customizing for these ?
i am beginning to appreciate the "custom" Schrades. the basic Schrades were so well built, that it is "worth" customizing them. then you have a really special EDC. roland

Definitely an 8 pattern Roland. The blades are "high carbon" and the same configuration and pattern numbering. I don't know for sure when it was produced, the Schrade paperwork inside of the box says 1991. It appears to be a commemorative production knife, not serialized. The box has a pattern number NYK8S, which is on a white end sticker, covering up I believe another number NYK94S, which would have been a similar knife in a trapper pattern. No mention of Herman Williams.

below is the sellers pic. of the knife i bought. carbon steel blades, unused condition and incorrect box are noted. Hal, i think this is the same as yours.

Those are really nice ea42.

Thank you for sharing.

I gotta spend more time over here. I forgot how much I love the traditionals.
Getting my "older" ones out has gotten me "re-interested"

Thanks Mike, and welcome!:D

Roland, no problem, I already have it, but thanks a lot for the offer!
