A couple questions (concerns?) about my latest CRK.

The large micarta seb that I received yesterday has a noticeably stickier lock than my only other CRK. (small seb)

Also, the lockup seems to be a LOT deeper than the small seb's. I admit that I am not the foremost expert on CRK knives, so I figured I'd take a pic or two of the lockup. I'm at school right now, so cell phone pics will have to do. Is this lockup normal in your opinion? And about the stickiness, I've tried graphite and a sharpie to no avail. It isn't sticky like a strider or ZT 0551, but it is noticeably different than the small seb. Thanks for your input guys.

I have a new plain 21 that looks just about the same. I have several 21s and only the one is like that. But it doesn't seem to be a problem with lockup.

As long as it doesn't move I don't think I'll bother with it until it goes back to the spa someday.

Do the lockbars on sebenzas move when they wear?

Specs say the knife should lock up between 50-75% (the quote is out there, just to lazy to search now), but the main thing is, as long as there is no blade play there should not be a problem. If it bothers you, send it in.

On the stickiness. Titanium does that. Even on both mine there was a slight stickiness at the beginning. Even on my Gareth Bull custom. Use her and if it gets worse, send it in, but it should become better after some time in use.

For what its worth, I know it is irritating sometimes, but talking to some makers they actually prefer it. Reasoning is that it makes the lock less prone to slipping if there would be a failure.

All framelocks (R.I.L) move as they wear, or else they would cause bladeplay, Sebenzas and other heat treated locks or carbonised locks (Hinderer) dont wear as fast/or much at all.

I am keeping track of my Insingo lock up for some time now (close to a year or so) after it fell 3m onto bricks and no movement past 60% in more then a year of use.

There are also 10 year old Sebenzas (So-Lo has/had one) where it has not moved since he got it (4 years ago) past 90% and he opens and closes his knives a lot.

you can see if rotating the stop pin cover changes the lockup at all

Yes loosen the stop pin and rotate it 180 degrees. That should change the lockup quite a bit. The lock pin in the Sebenza is designed to do that. Let us know if it helps.

The stop pin is not eccentric. If moving it changes depth of lockup, that'd be odd, but sometimes knives, even Sebs, go back together a little funky and you might get lucky. Your lockup does look a little deep. I have a 1996 or 1997 Seb that went back for work earlier this year because it finally got to a little over 100%. I think I'd call CRK and ask them to take a look at a pic and make a recommendation on whether or not to send it in.

I think the lock percentage on your knife if within spec. However a sticky lockup on a sebenza 21 could be a sign of an issue. The only 21 Ive ever had that had a sticky lockup
the whole knife was messed up. It would disengage while in use and I was able to push the lockbar with ease back and forth when the blade was open.

Are you allowed to have knives on campus. At Clemson we carried them anyway but if I remember correctly it's a no no.

I don't think we have any knife specific rules. I had my sebenza on my desk the whole time I was in class today. I also opened it up to take this picture within plain view of everyone in the computer lab.

Love the south.

I took it apart and reassembled. No change. I think I will just use it until it's time for a spa treatment, then I'll let them know about the problem when I send it off. Or is it something I should tell them right away?

I don't have any other problems than late lockup, thank God.

That lockup looks like it has a good 20 years of use in it before you have to send it in to the spa.

Unless Mr. Reeve retires and the business disappears  there is no reason not to wait until it really needs to be addressed. As I mentioned, my small Seb regular went about 15 years before it actually required work.

Like I said earlier, I have one that's new and the exact same way. I decided to just carry and use it and when it needs work I'll send it in. Locks up nice and tight right now so I'm not that worried about it.
