Beautiful, as usual.
I've been thinking of making a hawk out of a ball peen hammer for a while. Do you buy yours new or used? If new, where do you like to buy them from?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris I used to try to use only US made bp's but now I use what I can find, usually imports but had good luck forging them. The main thing is the eye shape,it needs to be an oval shape and even then I use a die grinder to get it the way I want it.It's really harder to use a bp and get the eye straight then starting with raw material, but I don't have a mill to slot and slitting can be a pain to get straight-----

Thanks to the rest of you who commented,I appreciate all the responses---Best Regards Butch:)

I'm more of an axe vs hawk guy but those are both lovely.

And you say those are made out of ball pein hammers. Out of curiosity do you think you would be able to make a medieval style war hammer the same way?

I haven't tried,I guess you could use a 32 oz but the ball on the hammer would limit the size of the hammer part of the axe.I have been thinking of trying one,if it works out I'll post it---Thanks Jamine and Brian---Regards Butch

You wouldn't need or want a very big head. Technically, it would be counter productive, as the smaller the impact area the greater the directed energy increasing its crushing force from the blow (think punch verse slap.)

While not an experienced smith by any means my initial thought on how to go about making it would be to enlarge the shaft opening and draw out one of the hammer ends to form the rear spike like you did on the hawks. As far as the larger front hammer end goes you could probably just leave it as is, or you could flatten it or when its hot pound in a wedge shape horizontally and then vertically creating four individual protrusions (my favorite hammer style) maximizing its impact forces.

Just my $.02 and initial thoughts.

I hope you do give this a go because if its quality is anything like those hawks I'm sure it would be amazing.

Cheers

I guess Im' getting war axe and war hammer confused:confused: I see what youre saying about size.I'll see if I can find some pics of a war hammer. Thanks for the input-----regards Butch

I'm certainly glad these didn't make it to Ebay. I picked the large one up at the post office today. It's a very nice piece!

Many thanks to you Butch
