I have no knifemaking experience or skills whatsoever. I was just wondering if anyone ever tried to rig up two belt grinders side by side with the belts facing each other at flat grind bevel angles such that one could grind both sides of a blank at the same time? I guess a jig of some sort could secure the handle section and an articulating arm could guide the work as it goes along. What do you think?

Hello,

I think it would be more trouble than its worth. Best to learn Freehand first, because in my experiance if you cant grind free hand you will never produce world class
symetrical grinds that are even.

At the Blade Show this year in Atlanta there was a belt grinder that did this. Around $2600-$2700.00 the best I remember. Can't remember the makers name that made it.

My only real concern with that would be:

Ever slipped, and gotten your finger on the belt?

Imagine now that, instead of it simply being tugged and thrown down a bit, it gets trapped, because there's another belt right there. The only way to remove it, if you can't turn the grinders off (and FAST!) will be to wait until it is reduced in diameter to a size that can be pulled free...do you see where this is going?

For pure shuddering willies, this beats the average wood chipper, any old day...

Thanks for all your responses. Nothing beats learning how to grind one side at a time, I would imagine. I didn't know that someone already came up with such a device. Kalindras, one's hand wouldn't be near the belt grinder area because you would guide the jig holding the blank through the grinding/stock removal process. I can only imagine the scenario you descibed above.
