A custom collaboration waiting to happen?

Hi guys,

I have long admired Bob Dozier's handmade fixed-blade knives and their almost unbelievable prices -- unfortunately the sheeple presence around here pretty much precludes wearing a fixed-blade. I hadn't seen much about his folding knives until recently, but they seem to be a prime candidate for a Spyderco custom collaboration. They are much more expensive than his fixed-blades ($350 to $600+!), and have a fatal flaw in lacking clips, but the designs are focused on functionality and use, and seem like they would marry well with Spyderco's design and manufacturing philosophy.

This "Buckhunter" is a prime example. Can you imagine this with a clip, a Spydie hole, and with the 3.75" blade in VG-10 or CPM-440V?

Here is another great Dozier folder of about the same size, with his double liner-lock. I actually like this one better due to the shape of the 3.5" blade, and of course the G10 handle. Give it a Spydie hole and a clip (tip-up please) and it would be ready to go.

Does any one else like this notion, or have I finally gone off of the deep end?

Carlos, I think you are spot on

.
I love the no-nonsense look of the knives

But with a clip (near the edge please) and a hole (+ the reasonable price) :

Carlos,
You have just suggested the collaboration of my dreams. I have long been a fan (and purchaser) of Bob's knives. Very basic, full function using knives to the max! And the D2 steel on Bob's knives outperform any other knives in my collection with other non-D2 steels. (My own opinion and not trying to spark a debate here.)
But, not being a metallurgist or a chemist or a machinist, could Spyderco make a D2 folder?
(Ka-bar did...)

I was thinking that they wouldn't want to make a knife that would compete directly against Dozier's handmade knives with the D2 steel. Actually I would like to see something like this in BG-42 or VG-10, but I don't know if Spyderco is still planning to do anything in BG-42.

Now that the meek have inherited the Earth, is there someplace else for the rest of us to go?

I really love Dozier's stuff. But by the the time you modify his handle and blade shape to take the hole, and change from Dozier's trademark D2 to VG10, 440V or ATS55, you ain't got much "Dozier" left, would you...?

Sing,

I don't know, but it seems like the C48 Wegner and Starmate still have a lot of "Tim Wegner" and "Bob Terzuola" in them, respectively, despite being Spyderized. Perhaps D-2 would be possible, who knows?

Even so, I think that there is more to Bob Dozier's knife design abilities than just the use of D2. But we're sliding off-topic a bit, as I was just curious to see if there was any interest amongst other Spydie fans for a Dozier-Spyderco folder collaboration (whatever the form).

Indeed a fine collaboration it would be. Bob and KaBar still cannot get their projects off the ground yet. I think it went to the backburners.

Hanging out at the local knife spot (no, not sfo! ANOTHER knife spot) today and a gentleman brought a Dozier D-2 skinner in that he had just processed two elk with.
Took a few minutes on a Diamond sharpener and twenty strokes on the Sharpmaker fine stones. What a beauty this knife is! I don't hunt but I asked how the knife handled and performed in the various positions need to do the work the knife was designed to do. Gentleman said it was THE best skinner he'd used in FORTY years of hunting!!!
I'd be cranked to see this collaboration - either fb or folder version!

Sal? Oh, SAL!!!!

I've had more paper cuts than cuts from knives, but the knives are QUICKLY gaining!

Oh well guys, there only appear to be half-a-dozen of us that support the idea. Far too little for a petition to Sal. Seemed like a good idea though...

Hi Carlos. Actually, I agree and think it's a good idea. We tried to get a collaboration going with Bob several years ago. Even produced a prototype.

Unfortunately, Bob has an agent. The agent and I couldn't come to terms. Sorry.

Sad that one or more great knives did not see the light of day because of some intermediary.

Thanks Sal,

I am not suprised that idea occured to you years ago. Alas for what might have been...

Carlos,

You clearly have a better idea of what may work for a Spyderco collaboration than I do.

I had thought Tom Anderson's stuff would be a natural for Spyderco but that didn't seem to come even as close to happening as did Dozier.

Dozier I thought would be a natural for Kabar given they are working with D2 and the fact they have a folder that even resembles some of Dozier's model...

Well, it's always interesting to see the collaborations as they come out.

Spyderco is slowing down on the collaborations at this time. We've done quite a few and we helped get the factory / collaboration movement going. I think that now there are "cooler" knives as a result.

We have only a few "in the works". The Vesuvius (Frank Centofante) is next.

We are currently focusing more on the "in house" designs for the next year. Meerkat, Temperance series and ATR as examples.

The problem then becomes what models to drop off to make way for the new ones.

OK, I'll take the bait
biggrin.gif
. Sal, what or who is an ATR?

Clay beat me too it. I stopped to search the forum archive for any reference on an "ATR" and couldn't find a whisper. So permit me to seconds the motion: Sal, what's an ATR?
biggrin.gif

Sorry, and kudos to your powers of observation. "Bait" cannot be mentioned too soon lest I get in trouble both from staff (announcing too early) and from ELU (taking too long to deliver after first showing).

The "ATR" is an "in house" design that we began last January. Owen just finished the first metal prototype. "ATR" stands for "At The Ready", which is my definition of "tactical". The first public showing will be the New York Kife Show. Many of our models have been introduced at this Show.

The model does have some "new" features never before seen on a folding knife.

I'll describe the model after the show, but won't be showing photos until SHOT Show in January.

Thanks Sal, it's always nice to have another Spydie to look forward to

. I'll take a punt and say that it's going to have a compression lock (not too difficult, given your previous post)
