I found the perfect machete I want, but the handle looks like it would hurt to hold. Anyway. Are there easy and relatively affordable ways to change the handle on it?

I have done a couple for friends, they had plastic handles that I just broke off and replaced with wood slabs and pins.

What kind of handle do you want. The best design I've ever put on a machete was a take off from Rhino knives chopper. You can just strip off the plastic grips and re grind the grip to what you like, put on scales of your choosing and go.
BTW, if you copy Laurence's grip, please ask permission first. I did several years ago and he was kind enough to consent. This is not for legal purposes, just good manners.

One note, on this design, I used a 1/4 spacer of lead epoxied to the grip to increase the slashing power and dampen vibration. I have yet to see a machete design that did not place the noded right in the palm of your hand.

Here is the protype that I really never managed to destroy. I even loaned it to my son who can break anything:D

I replaced the wood handle on my pal's with oak burl, Accuglas, and two Loveless rivets. I also soaked the handle in linseed oil and then hand rubbed the finish. The handle still looks very good, and the machete gets lots of heavy use, two duckblinds worth of work and much other use.
