A day in Sydney...Recommendations

So...I'll be exploring the S. Island of New Zealand first half of September. Turns out I'll have at least a 12 hr. layover in Sydney coming back. I've been to the Cairnes/Port Douglas area a few times for diving (they have a cute little reef over there ;)) and Dainestree (sp?), but no where else in AU.

Does anyone have any recommendations on activities/sites to see in Sydney if you only had 8 hrs or so to do it? I'm interested in both City and Natural Environment (if it's possible to get into the wild close by) related stuff without limitation.

Thanks for the advice

Give me a date to start with ...!!!!

You could do a lightening tour of the Blue Mountains to the west (you will need a driver ;) ) but that is probably as wild as you can get, and without more time you will only see the tourist sights from the main stopoffs. Now you have plenty of time to see the sights of the centre of Sydney, Bridge, Opera House, Lunch/Beer in The Rocks. A ferry to Manly from Darling Harbour/ return is also a cheap (public ferry out and back) way to see those iconic sights from the water and have lunch at the Corso at Manly (good eats and sights - though it may be a bit cool for the "white pointers" to be out in force on Manly Beach.

Happy to help out mate.

Cant offer any info but I can tell you I am jealous. Would love to see Sydney at some point.

The wildest parts of Sydney aren't that far from the city. :D

Seriously, there's a million things to do, so fitting it all in within 8hrs will be a stretch. I reckon you see the city and the harbour. Before you know it, 8 hours will have disappeared.

Hooking up with Andrew the Australian for a chauffeur would be a great idea if he's free. :)

.... I may not be "free" but I am certainly very very cheap....just see the "what do you do for a living" thread... ;)

RR, just make sure that you don't go to south-western Sydney parts, it could be one way trip...

Another possibility if you decide to skip City is the Royal National Park which is not that far from the airport, but will require a car/driver.

elof_alv.... really ....common.... I was going to take him for lunch in Punchbowl.... "Jasmin" on Punchbowl rd is actually fantastic Mediterranean food.... the bodies in the street outside can be a little off putting but I do like my Holumi.

I'll be there on a Sunday, Sep 15. As far as Punchbowl, I will kindly decline...I've dealt with enough unfriendlies...this trip is the fun/relaxing kind.

Thanks for the advice thus far.

Western Sydney......Baaaaaaahahahahahahahhaaaa :barf: Needs a Nuke.
There will be plenty to do walking around Darling Harbour.
