A day of carrying the BaliYo

The BaliYo by Spyderco is probably the most interesting pen I've ever heard of. Not only does it feature a Fisher Space Pen refill, but it's designed to be less of a pen and more of a toy. Essentially, it allows you to have balisong fun without scaring the sheeple. Being a Canadian, I have never handled or even seen a real balisong, but that's besides the point....

So far, I really like it! I've been constantly flipping and performing tricks with it all day. Operation is smooth and the pen is well made overall. It writes well, the ergonomics for it aren't as bad as they look, and performing tricks is frustrating fun. I messed up a lot, and dropped it a lot. Thankfully, it's tough, quality plastic. If you get the right momentum you'll be amazed with what you can do with it. The DVD it comes with is adequate for teaching you a few basic tricks. Eventually, you can create your own!

There is one thing I do not like about this pen. The clips are removable. I know they're designed to be, but I absolutely hate that, as I almost lost both clips on my first day of carrying the darn thing. They snap back on once they're popped off, but I think I'm going to use Gorilla Glue to keep mine where they are.

Some people might complain that it's a little expensive; I spent a little over $30 shipped for mine. My opinion is, if you think that's expensive for a pen, you should take a look to see what Benchmade is asking for their pens...which use the same Fisher Space Pen refills as the BaliYo.

Overall, great pen, and great toy. I recommend it for anyone who wants a fun pen or wants to play with a balisong but legally can't. Or even if you can, you might like it!

I've always been curious. But having experience with real balisongs have probably spoiled me. Not to mention its weight is probably all wrong. Maybe they should do one out of steel.

I heard that Mr. Glesser wanted to make it toylike, so unless demand for it is really high, there probably won't be any metal versions.

I don't think the balance is that bad. I can perform tricks with it, and I've never been good at that sort of thing.

I had one, working at a hardware store I probably averaged at least 7 hours a week of flipping (no joke) and you really can do regular balisong tricks with these. The pen really doesn't have the heft for a lot of tricks, and it didn't stand up very well to the concrete floor. I would pay this much for a steel or aluminum version, but I wouldn't pay this much for a plastic Baliyo again. I also had clip problems I solved with superglue. The balance was good, and the colors made it unintimidating.

Make sure to purchase the USA-made version of the Baliyo. They are more expensive, but have *much* better build quality (the cheaper ones are made in China). You get what you pay for!
