I recently traded bushman5 for a maxpedition fatboy jumbo which now serves as my car kit.

i was familiar with the maxpedition fatboy jumbo because i had the original smaller fatboy for over 2 years and carried it happily on many trails.

decided to take the kit for a test and go for a hike. i took a few pics for you guys so enjoy!

This plant is called "Swamp Horsetail" aka "Water Horsetail"- Equisetum fluviatile
Notes: Apparently the "Equisteum species have an affinity for gold in solution, and they concentrate it more than most plants, so they have been used in bioassays for the metal" (source: Plants of Coastal BC - Jim Pojar). To my understanding this means that the plant likes grow grow around gold...?

This plant is called "Stink Currant" - Ribes bracteosum [i think]
Its pretty late in the season so the leaves have changed color and the berries have faded as well but i'm pretty sure these are stink currant berries and leaves.
Notes: Apparently they have a bland flavour but are edible. They were collected and eaten in large quantities by first nations peoples of the north west coast.

@bill: thanks for the compliments :)

Awesome pics. Will you please describe the cooking set up and where you got it?

The cooking setup is my ultralight cooking kit for one. It consists of a snow peak mini soloist setup. This setup includes a smaller cup/measuring cup with increments in both oz and ml. The pot handles fold to hug the pot for storage and comes with a nice fitting lid which fits on BOTH the pot as well as the cup.

The set is made from titanium.

The stove is your standard trangia alcohol stove burning methyl hydrate.

The stove stand is a collapsible (packs flat) stove stand made by a Canadian company. The stove stand is called the "littlejohn stove stand. Its made form nickel plated steel and is corrosion resistant which is nice on the wet coast.

The stove:
You can purchase just the individual burners for 12-14 dollars at the MEC (www.mec.ca) but are only available in store.

Cheers,

ETA:

The windscreen is made from heavy duty aluminum foil and high temperature heat resistant tape. In my experience a wind screen is essential for cooking with alcohol stoves to increase fuel efficiency while reducing fuel consumption.

say, that a butt of a handgun here?

You got me. I thought the same thing. Just couldn't identify what gun it was. But it looked like it had the sloppiest fit for the magazine well of any gun I had seen. :o

rofl. yeah i wish i could ccw a nice ruger mark III in there but i couldnt do it legally of course :)

Great kit and great pics buddy !!!!

I have been thinking of adding a small snap lock container filled with emergency food stuffs this winter such as some Jerky, an energy bar, sugar,maybe a small container/sachet of honey, tea bags, bullion cubes etc. Does anyone do this ?

the pouch with my saw contains a package of Backpacker's Pantry Hawaiian Rice and Chicken (serves 2). in the main pouch i have instant coffee, some tea, cup-a-soup mix and a couple gatorade drink mix packets.

i also have a spare bottle of fuel (enough to refil the stove to full once) and carry two trioxane tablets. Worst comes to worst i could just put the pot on a fire but havent had to do that yet :)

thanks guys, i plan on repacking it a bit for winter though. i plan on adding a two candles and another package of Backpacker's Pantry entree.

Possible to see a spillout picture? don't do it if you're an organization junky. I'm looking for a light backless setup capable of an overnight and it's hard to tell how much you're carrying Does the weight on one side throw you off or strain your back at all?

Thought you said you were busy this weekend... you just don't have time for us :(

if you're looking for ultralight survival food you should consider making Joe's Moose Goo.

Basic Recipe:

* 2 parts honey
* 2 parts corn flour (NOT corn meal! I plan to try sweet rice flour soon.)
* 1 part peanut butter (preservative-laden)
* Mix thoroughly, will take some time.
* Pack into Coghlan's Squeeze Tube (REI, Campmor, etc), or in cold weather wrap in wax paper.

I'll post a spillout picture within a few days. In terms of straining one side? Yep, it definetly does but with a walking stick/hiking pole it doesnt seem all that bad. For a long distance hike i think i'd still want to be packing my gear in a backpack.

I actually did this hike before class today. since my class is later in the day on tuesdays i just had to wake up that much earlier :D
