Been a bit busy today. First off we had our duties with our Scout Troop. On several of the holidays we will put up flags at the local VA medical center here in town. When we are done, the entire drive into the VA has flags ever 15 meters for around a quarter of a mile. It is really a nice site to see. (No pics cause I don't feel too terrible comfortable posting up pics of other people's kids without their permission.) Afterwards we usually head out for breakfast. We came home, I got some time to shave (no shave November can kiss my grits, that beard was itchy!) and get our Scout uniforms on, then head into town for the Veterans Day Parade here in town. Someone finally listened to me and got all the Scout Troops together instead of spread out throughout the parade, so that was good. Finally got that wrapped up, then headed home for a little R&R. Me and the boy played video games for a little bit, then I told him we needed to wrap it up while he did his chores. While he was getting those knocked out, I went outside to see what we had around for options for a fire. Turns out we didn't need much and we got some water boiled for a nice big cup of hot cocoa for the boy. Here's some pics of how it all went down. Enjoy.

He started off holding the baton in his left hand, which he learned was probably wrong when he smacked his other hand with it. Got him straightened out and it went pretty well from there on out. All in all, good times, and we got to make fire like I had regretted not doing yesterday.

Is that a burned hornet's nest? way to put the hater-ade in the hot chocolate :D

Glad you guys got to get out and spend some quality time enjoying controlled pyromania the tasty way. Good skills practice for the boy as well!

Looks like you covered everything!!! Steel, fire, and hot coco!!! :D

Well, there was this wasp nest up under our deck, and last fall, I had this can of expanding foam, so I filled the wasp nest with the foam late one night when all the wasps were asleep, and then the wasp nest was no more. Then, it fell off and kinda fell apart, and when I was looking for tinder I found these three disks of wasp nest that was dry and ready for the fire. It held a lot of the really fine shavings quite nicely.

The "stove" is an Ikea Ordning Stainless Steel Utensil Holder. Snagged mine off of Ebay for like $8 at one point.

We had us a good time. The boy needs to work on making finer shavings, and needs some time starting fires with just the ferro rod, he had a lot of difficulty with it, but that is why we practice.

Cool beans man, all kids love hot cocoa. I have an MSR pot just like that one and it's one of my favorite pots. I wish I had remembered to drive down to the IKEA when I was in Tampa, I wanted a couple of those strainers but I guess I'll have to order them online.

we're supposed to be getting an IKEA in the fall of 2014 -- hope I can hold out that long...

Very nice Mr. D.....

Good pics, a fun time, a few skills and a reminder you can build your basic "tool box" of skills almost anywhere.....

BTW......the back yard is the very best place to practice fire building in the rain, snow, wind, etc...

Thanks for the post...

Yessir that would be mine. Was wondering where that had gotten off to.

There are two Ikeas in Chicago... If you ask real nice I bet one of our Chicago 'Heads could make a run. Or next time I am up there I will... Just let give me a list.

As for the pics, That is awesome man! I need to get a firesteel and get some time in... I think I'm gonna square up my FFG 16.

OMG, is that a drunk stippling job on your 16? Jackson Pollock would be proud.

Yes and yes. The spatula thingy is perhaps my favorite cooking utensil I have ever used.
