I would first like to say hello to everyone as I am knew to this hobby.

I am thinking about working on my second knife and trying to get in my head what I want it to look like. I recently saw a few knives at a local gun and knife show that I really liked.

One characteristic that I saw was that some of them appeared to have what appeared to be slightly countersunk allen head machine screws attaching the handles to the tang. I was wondering if these are readily available for purchase or were they custom to that maker (I can't remember the name to save my life). These were full tang knives, not folders.

I didn't know if these would technically be called rivets, hence the post name

If they are custom made how do you go about doing it?

Thank You
Willis

Thanks for the replies guys

I called myself looking there and didn't see what I was looking for, I'll try to find a picture of one here on the sight to illustrate what I'm talking about

thanks alot guys, that looks like it. But what I don't understand (and I may just be dense here) but how do you use that to attach the handle to the tang.

It wouldn't seem like you could get more than a thread or 2 coming from each side into the tang. Does that make sense?

I use these quite a bit at work....We call them FHMS- Flat head machine screws. Another name would be FHCS- Flat head cap screw.

depending on the thickness of your tang and if it's hardened..
think about how thin folder liners are..:)

sex bolts interesting? look like the one side is similar but not the other side..

I wonder if an "extra deep" nut would be put through the tang, then one short sex bolt screwed in from each side? Scales would be counter-sunk from the inside to take the nut?

I use folder pivots for mine. usually 3/16" Diameter X 3/8" long with 4-40 screws. You can get them at any of the supply houses for a couple bucks.

good point..Jason how much longer can you get them?

for the smaller dia. ones I think you can get them up to about 1/2" to 5/8"? long
the small taps aren't long enough to go all the way through longer ones so you'll have to custom make longer ones if needed.
that's what I had to do on that colb knife where the jade was 1/8" thick x 2
+ the tang + the counter sink on both sides. :)
