I can't speak for everyone here ofcourse but after reading countless "if you only had one knife or tool in bush" scenarios I started to think. Though I often have several blades with me in the bush "just for kicks" I generally answer this pong pondered question everyday!!! And in a not so popular way. Firstly I live and work in the Canadian north. From haliburton to cochron and Sioux lookout and so forth and I generally do only carry one blade and furthermore I do so in places and situations where I people are generally advised to carry far more.
I carry a small fixed blade and firesteel combo. Is anyone else proving their answer to this question?
Is anyone else carrying this combo?
Aside from an axe or hatchet there is little else I could ever want for.
Are pocket fixed blades popular????
Please show pictures. Here Re a few of mine.
Done by our very own maker here. Who knows him??? Unbeatable stuff. I can't list what this little guy has done and gotten me through in the past and will in the futur.
I showed you mine. So you show me yours!!!!

Pervert! I have shown you mine, now show me yours. No pix, but the small FBs I have carried, combined with with a SAK will take care of 99% of what I need done.

It looks like the knot on your firesteel loop is on fire in that second pic. Looks like a great knife. Be safe out there.

Hi all,

Upnorth, I carry a knife design that Horace Kephart carried and used up
until is death in 1931. Here is his knife that is in the museum dedicated to him.

This knife design is by far the best design I think.

I do every thing that Horace talks about using his knife for and more.

I made two replicas of that design for myself, One with elk antler for the handle and one with a orange G-10 handle. Each knife has a matching firesteel also.

I carry the orange handled one every day on my belt right next to my survival
belt kit. If my pants are on this knife is on me.

The elk antler one I keep in my pack, for when I am in down at the river and in the woods there.

These are the two knives I used most for my fun in the woods type of knives my other tool that I used a lot is my leatherman wave. I love the pliers and the saw blade.

It's been many years since I rode the Polar Bear Express "down North" to Moosonee. Your post brought back some memories, but back to the knives. Although my EDC is usually 3 knives on duty and 2 off, I have many, many times headed out with only a 111mm SAK with me. It has never let me down, and handled anything I ever threw at it.

Coors'? Really?

I prefer a 5" blade belt knife. However I have a couple 4's that I use as well.

I have one that would qualify as a pocket fixed blade. A custom by G.L. Drew which I had him make for me primarily as a utility blade for leatherworking. It is indeed one of my most favorite knives. I like it enough that It will be the next one I have duplicated from 52100 steel which I prefer over the 5160 this knife is made from.

Overall my favorites are 5's.

Like you I usualy have either a large chopping knife (Kukri or my custom) or a hatchet. And a fire kit.

I rotate through several small fixed blades for pocket carry. On any given day, I'll have one of the following in my pocket: ESEE Izula, Becker Necker, Bark River Little Creek, Bark River Woodland Special, Bark River Colonial Patch or my Bark River Mikro Canadian.

If I'm expecting to be outdoors for any real amount of time I'm likely to have the Izzy or Woodland on me.

Thoes are really great looking knives and I like the design and set up as well- Joel

Love the setup, northern. Who made it? I usually have a fixed, a kit, and SAK on me at all times

This was made by our own mark wohlwend. He did the kydex and the firesteel as well. There is a full thread on it in his makers section under "a real working knife" or something of the sort. Great guy to deal with! Great workmanship! And a great tool I rely on everyday.
As far as defending the coors light well it was left over from a party and therefor free haha

Ps since it matters to me I'd like to add that marks prices are great too. I've been drooling over a bunch of his stuff currently up for sale haha im hoping someone picks them up so I don't haha times are tight.

i'm not too proud to admit that while moving the firesteel around to grab a quick picture the shock-cord on the firesteel did get a little melted...
i know, dumb move. thankfully it was just for a picture and was only there for a second... and was just the ends of the shock-cord which had been fraying and needed a good melting anyways haha...
but good catch!
this could definetly be in a "what not to do" thread......

Here's mine. It was made by Jim Wintrcek here in South Central Texas. It has a 2 7/8" ATS-34 steel blade, 4" full tang handle with mesquite handles scales...well-nigh on being indestructable! It's small, light, can't tell you're carrying it, and is about the handiest knife I have! Don't have a pocket sheath for it, but the leather belt sheath works very well.

For general use, I only need one knife.
Mine is a Jarvenpaa Aito Puukko

Aside from an axe or hatchet there is little else I could ever want for.

HOWEVER, you mention a caveat: I carry an axe with me. If I didn't, my knife choice would definitely be different -- more to the large size of the scale.

YUes, I also carry an LMF firesteel.

Now, I do carry other knives, but only for specific uses -- fillet knife, knife to field dress game, etc, but I don't always carry them, and they aren't for general use.

I can't carry a fixed blade at work or concealed (in pocket) out in public in my state, unless I'm hunting, hiking, or camping - but I always have a locking folder, SAK huntsman, Gerber multitool, & magnesium bar with me. Fixed blade and folding saw live in the truck along with an old Plumb hatchet.

Northern, another Canuk here although I admit that most of my time is an urban environment. I EDC regularly a SAK-OHT. When I'm playing in the snow, as a minimum I have the same SAK-OHT plus a fixed blade. Personally, I think you are wanting in the fire department, especially this time of year, with nothing but a pocket fixed blade.

Yes, you can process bigger wood with it, but not efficiently. If you had to bed down for the night in that fluffy stuff, that little fire in your OP won't cut it, nor will it last an hour without constant replenishing. Its great for making a cuppa, warming the hands but not a real way to process woods. Truly, my SAK-OHT while capable of processing wood faster is also insufficient to provide longer term fire/warmth. I think you really should consider a take-down buck saw as part of your combo or a 3/4 axe.

But hey, you did have 'For Real' in your title. If was 'for play', then a 3" pocket fixed blade is more than enough.

I want one. But just picked up that Compact bushcraft from Mark Wohlwend.

Can't wait to get it and get out with it now.
