I've been looking for a hatchet to carry hunting for some time, mostly for skinning. This isn't it, but it is getting close.

It's an "A. G Russel Camp Ax"
http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_type/axes/a_g_russell_camp_ax_with_black_micarta.html

The head is too big and too thin. It's made out of some near stainless euro metal and cost about 4 times what it should, but it was a birthday present from my girls. I haven't had a chance to try it out, but I'll do some light chopping and report back if anyone is interested.

I'm going to make a smaller version out of .25" 5160 that should be just about perfect for what I want.

I haven't really used 0their axes, but I have fondled with them at store a few times, and they are very well made.

I do own some of their knives, for the last 10 years or so, and I must say, they are quite good. Well tempered and very clean lines, etc.

They are worth the money.

One thing take into consideration that they tend to be a bit thinner than most American brands.

If you like them, look up their traditional Navajas ( traditional spanish folders) they are gorgeous, with great lines and have the most comfortable handles I have ever tried.

marenoa,
Noticed your from Venezuela ( Beautiful Country ) was there fishing a few years back.
Went down to Puerto Ayacucho and flew to a camp on the Ventuari River. Wow was that beautiful. Caught Peacock Bass and Payara great time....

Muela knives of spain has something just like this. They are kind of expensive with the exchange rate though. when I was in spain they were something like 70 euros

Hey Dusty, Happy you liked our country, dude you where far from where I'm from.

I have never fished in the amazon jungle, at one time i did go up to Los Andes (sad part is that the really good fishing spots are national parks so no fishing there) and fished some over there, It was great, and obviously done a little in the Caribbean.

If you ever come back and go by Caracas, I'll happily give you a tour of the region, their's also a couple of Dam around where a lot of people go fish

The A G Russell is very similar to the old Blackjack Viking Raider.
The Blackjack differs in that it has a pointed beard, a guthook on the back of the head and the grip portion is rubber/kraton and is slightly curved (looks like the Blackjack Grunt handle).
I have a Viking Raider i'll try to take a pic of it today and post it.
Personally i think of the A G Russell axe as an improved version of the Blackjack.
I plan on buying one sometime in the future.

My digital camera batteries need to be recharged so no new pics today.
However heres an old cropped photo of my Blackjack Viking Raider.

Bearded axes are nice, if you can get mama's permission to use them in the kitchen. ;)

the Rosellis get nice reviews for that 'bearded' feature. The wierd fat handle isn't the problem it looks like it ought to be, the ugly thing works better than you'ld expect. I suspect there's a lot of potential Roselli customers that never bother to try one out, just on looks.

The firestone small axes are useable as kitchen tools also, but maybe lack a little in balance.. more suitable for throwing than making a sammich, which some folks would call superior and others wouldn't..

you have at least 2 candidates for kitchen axes that don't suck.. though you might need to re-profile a blade to your taste.. i'd be interested to find out if either of them suits your needs..
