A different sort of whisky thread.

An ethanol drip is commonly used to treat methanol poisoning (causes blindness among other things). Methanol is metabolized to formaldehyde and then to formic acid (toxic). The same hepatic alocohol dehydrogenase that converts methanol to formaldehyde also converts ethanol to acetaldehyde. Ethanol is given to compete with methanol for metabolism by that enzyme until the methanol can be excreted (renally).
