A different way to weld steel together!

Explosives are also used, at a research scale for the moment, to compress metal powders to 100% if the theoretical density. It's very interresting.

This belongs in W&C so we can make truly appropriate comments about the Darwinian tendencies of anyone wanting to do this in his back yard.

But how strong is this stuff? If it works like the video said, you can get some pretty unique and strong metals.

I'm amazed that the bond looks so clean afterwords. Aside from that...Yeah, Darwin's waiting in the wings to be proven right. The next thing we'll see is one of the bystanders bonded to the metal (or what's left of him, anyway).

It does work exactly as the video said when done correctly. Explosively bonded metals are used for some very demanding applications.

It's just not a backyard mechanic technique.

knarfeng is correct about this process , they had a program showing this on Modern M arvels on t.v. its definitely not a backyard process anymore than using nuclear energy to make power . future uses could expand since explosives are dirt cheap compared to large scale high precision welds.
