Hi guys, i have some kind of problem here, cause i see alot of interest looking blades but i can buy only one of them, thought you might help me which knife to choose :)

First what i am looking in knife:

- solid feel
- good lockup
- good steel and cutting-friendly blade shape
- moderate weight and size with comfortable carrying clip
- self sharpening

(kidding with the last one :) )

Now what i have in mind:

- Spyderco Chinook II - good steel, but i'm not keen in back locks ant it looks a little "clumsy"
- MT Amphibian - looks like a great cutter but it seems too big either
- MOD Hornet - nice tactical feel, but that clip with 2 tiny screws bothers me
-EMERSON Mini Commander - love that wave, great blade shape, but it has chisel like ground and thin liners (i guess).

Anything else ?

Hope you will help me make my mind
I'd like to get all of them really, but at the moment i have to choose only one...

I have an Amphibian, and it is a great knife. I don't think it is too big, and the aluminum scales make it somewhat light (although the blade is very thick and heavy)
How about a Spyderco Paramilitary? Comes with better steel than the amphibian, G10 scales, and the compression lock. Also less expensive than some of the others. Great knife.

Do you just not like lockbacks, or worry about ther strength? Cause the Chinook is MBC rated, I think that's somewhere around 800 in/lbs.

Get either the Benchmade 551 Griptilian or the slightly smaller Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian...Trust me on this!.:)

Yep, just when i thought that Amph is all what i need I noticed that my max money limit is something like 170$ with shipping (10$) so i guess it means goodby Amph

And about lockbacks, I just don't like them, but from other side, it seems like a good and solid lockup

Damn i guess i don't know what i want

Thank you for your answers,

sorry but after some time of lurking here and there i got still 2 questions:

Chinook screws - are they standard torx ones, which i'll be able to adjust at home ?

Hornet - i can't find any store who has plain model for 150$max. and support international orders, any help (except New Graham cause they have problem with my ecard, nuff said).

Thanks and sorry again for bothering.

Spyderco uses cross-tip (phillips head) screws on all of their clips as far as I am aware, and I own quite a few of their models. I have the original Chinook and it is far from clumbsy. As a matter of fact, if it weren't for its slightly intimidating size I would probably carry it as my EDC, but my job doesn't require the frequent use of a knife and I don't want to intimidate my co-workers. It fits the hand well and, despite its heaviness, handles extremely well. The Chinook II is lighter weight than the original and will probably handle just as well or better, so I don't think you would be disappointed with it. I don't have any information on the Hornet.

Get the Mini-Commander and never look back. They did not get their world-wide rep for nothing.

I would skip the Chinook II if weight is an issue for you--it's rather heavy for a pocket-clip knife.

The Benchmade 556 or 551 or 720 or 721 or 730 would all be great choices.

Good luck,
Allen.

Thank you again for your replies, i decided to get Tempest and now i'm looking to get rid of it. Don't get my wrong - it's a great knife with thick and solid ss liner but the blade is just too thick to deep cutting of bread or anything (yeah i know - cutting bread with tempest ;) ).

Noi i probably hear glockman99 and buy sheepfoot gripty cause it looks like a fine slicer (althought that zytel handles seens thick  ;) ).

Take care!

Sounds to me that you need a Chris Reeve Sebenza. Large or small depending on what you consider 'moderate'. If that's too much $$$, try a Spyderco Para-Military.

The Mini-Commander is an excellent knife. Try to check out the lock at the particular Mini-Com you want to buy though - personally I have yet to see an Emerson with an insecure lock, but if you don't trust it...
I don't like chisel grounds in general, but the Mini-Com does not come with a real chisel ground - it's just the very edge that isn't ground from the backside.

Spyderco Para-Military. It has one of the most ergonomic handles on the market, a rock-solid lock, a perfectly executed flat grind, S30V steel, and it's fairly inexpensive to boot. I've carried mine every day since I bought it a week ago and probably will continue to carry it for a long, long time.

Thank you for your suggestions, i'll check gripty first :D

btw. stockman: funny ;) Yeah, i know i'm a picky :p

Have a look at the Paramilitary, it might be the knife you are looking for. A great EDC, flat ground blade, S30V steal, grippy G10 scales, and superb ergonomics. This will slice bread, fingers or anything you like straight from the box, but give it 15 minutes on the sharpmaker and you will have something special in your hand. This has been my first knife with S30V, crikey, this steal can take an unbeleivably sharp edge.

You should be able to find a clean Amphibian in your price range in the Exchange forum if you look for a while. I did and I've seen a couple since I bought mine in the $150.00 range. It's one of my favorite knives. I love tip up carry. The fat belly recurve loves to slice. Oh, yeah, and it's a Microtech! The fit and finish on mine is awesome.

There's lots of other knives, some already mentioned in this thread, but from what you originally asked about, I'd go Amphib all the way.
