A Dry Water Course, Some RATs, And Some Flint

Since I've gotten a pretty good grasp on the bow drill, and the Mullein I want to try for the hand drill isn't up yet...I've been thinking more about flint and steel, and flint cutting edges. I know there is a lot of chert in this area lots of points are still found in farmers fields here. I want to experiment some myself with what's available here locally. So today I a went for a hike up a dry watercourse where I had found some good sized pieces of flint in a pool below a small falls a while back. It has been dry for two weeks so I wanted to see if I could find some larger pieces on up above. Also, in the event of an evac due to an incident at one of the local nuclear power plants...or some such similar event...and the roads are clogged my rout west could well be on foot, I thought I'd see how over grown an old trail and logging road up this way is now. I hadn't been up that way in nearly twenty years before today.

This is the bottom of the first fall.

There is some pretty rough terrain here, and the rain forest is coming back to life now.

The mosquitoes are already getting rough in the evenings. I lit a little fatwood to smoke out an are while I took a break. I'm really liking the ESEE fire starter.

Climbed up a couple of short, dry, water falls.

I threw my pack onto the top of this fall.

This is looking back down it, you can see where the flowing water has carved patterns in the stone.

The trail is completely reclaimed by nature and the shelf that was the logging road is all but unrecognizable and probably is to someone unaware of its existence...but I did find one thing I was looking for.

Nice pics MistWalker:thumbup:

Do you plan on chipping out some of that flint to make some tools and arrowheads?

That would be a cool project..I gotta go find some now!

Neat Mist - are those pieces of flint incorporated into the old road bed? Yep, I would be chipping some of that stuff out because I couldn't help myself :D

South east Tennessee, at the southern tip of the East Appalachian Temperate Rain Forest. Here right now we are currently breaking 30 year old pollen records....

Great pics!

Thanks bro.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed them. This whole mountain side is a spiritual place for me...I just hadn't been to that spot in years. I'm really glad that area is not "cost effective" for development yet....I hope it stays that way for a long time.

Another cool thread..

Mistwalker are you still thinking of creating a website/blog type thing? I seem to reacall you mentioned it a while back.
