A Dumb Person's Question

I inherited a Schrade multi-tool knife from my late father but no instructions. I opened up the blades to have a look and now can't get the blades to fold back down - they've locked. I assume there is some easy way to release the lock but, darned if I can figure it out. Help appreciated!
(if this is too dumb a question to build a thread on, feel free to email me at ndale@uniserve.com).

Merry Christmas!

As you look at your open tool you will see a blade in each handle which is a bit higher and rounded. By pressing that round part down it will release the locked blades. Those two blades serve a double purpose in that if opened in the normal manner they are also tools. Ah you are a person after my own heart. I also have a natural gift for the use and understanding of tools. A screwdriver in my hand is like a child with there finger on the the button of an atomic bomb. By the way I learned how to operate this tool from a child I was doing a consumer, ( customer) show for Schrade in Philly and while discussing something about old knives with someone, another person had picked one of these up and asked how to close it. I also was at a loss. Until a child standing there said here let me show you my dad has one. Yes indeedy I really showed them what an expert I was on Schrade products that day. However I do know how to do it now and so do you. Enjoy the tool. LT

TH, There are no really dumb questions about Schrades. We may, in jest, give some dumb answers though. I have never held one of those tools either, so I probably would have been at a loss for a few minutes. However, being a former production engineer, former patent illustrator now contractor, I probably would have resorted to progressively larger hammers. :D

Welcome the hat to the Schrade forum............glad you came here with your question!
These guys really know their stuff! :D
Lt....trust a kid to know how to release the lock!...........sounds like my 7 year old......show him once and he's got it memorized.....

Welcome, The_hat. I'm sure you can close up your tool now thanks to the above guys.

Yeps.. Kids are sometimes more clever than adults. I have one of those old Imperial 'magic' knives', you know, where you have to hold it the right way and press down on the blade to open it. I've had adults spend a day trying to get it open, yet without fail, almost any kid will instantly figure it out. Just the way a child's mind works, I guess.

Hi The_hat: Just as a little added comment...if the multitool you have is a Plier tool, you have probably already gotten it closed with LT's instructions. If you are still having a problem, don't feel dumb. If your multitool is Navitool, there was a design flaw in them, and if you get all of the blades open at one time, just place the tool on a hard surface, and slide a regular screwdriver under the rounded, pivoting end of the blades. Press down with steady pressure, and that will release those blades also. This design was a great idea with this one really stupid flaw.

Once I gave a multitool to my daughter to take on a camping trip and it came back disassembled and incomplete, she and others couldn´t figure out how to close it and ended up taking it apart (and lost some blades in the process).

That one and others I´ve seen have the same problem as the Navitool, the designers apparently never thought that someone would open all blades at once but it is often done for cleaning, etc.

Progressivly larger hammers? I was kidding when I said that! Darnit, now I HAVE to get one of each of those to see if I am smarter than the tool!
