Well as much of a knife collector/enthusiast as I am, I can't for the life of me sharpen the damn things. I was curious is there was a kind soul out there who has skill in sharpening to sharpen a knife or two of mine? I have a Kershaw Leek that I use for an EDC knife and its edge has seen better days. I would of course pay for shipping to and from.

I have been 'practicing' on some junko knives that I dont care much if I ruin, but the problem there is the blade steel is such garbage that even good technique doesn't show.

You can PM me if you want so you dont have all the other sharpening idiots like myself asking for your services. If you had a few good feedback posts here that would help me some too. I dont have too many super expensive knives but I dont feel like losing any of them nonetheless.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

You PM is not set up to receive messages.

Spend the money and buy an EdgePro Sharpening system. You'll not need anything else, maybe a strop or some cardboard. :)

TFin04,

What sort of sharpener have you been trying? I always used Arkansas stones, but would end up scratching my blades, every time. I've recently bought a Spyderco Sharpmaker and it's a breeze. No scratches! And it comes with a video and instruction book. The Sharpmaker works very well, and is inexpensive - if paying postage to have your knives sharpened, it'll pay for itself quickly.

Good Luck,
Bob

There are many guys at gun shows who have special sharpening tools and for only a couple of bucks will sharpen any knife you have. There are also professional sharpeners who sharpen anything from knives to scissors (check yellow pages).

Sharpening is not hard to do, it isn't expensive to get started, and it works better if you do it yourself.

You never know how (in)competent an expert will be, or what he considers a good job. If he's been sharpening kitchen knives for housewives, doing your collection may be beyond his skills. He'll just tear up the edges and scratch the flats.

The Spyderco Sharpmaker has a lot of devoted users. It uses a basic, simple technique used by many systems, but with a few refinements that make it the best of the v-sharpeners. The instructions that come with it will get you started and a little experience will make you the expert quickly.

Best of all, you will be able to sharpen each knife up to its potential, since some knives should have a polished edge, others a toothier edge, and some a more obtuse edge. All this is easy to do with the Sharpmaker.

More expensive systems, and the older style benchstones, are fine also, and you can learn them, probably better, once you've gotten to understand what sharpening is all about, what actually makes a knive sharp and a sharp edge last. The Sharpmaker is an easy way to start learning this.

Wow, I didn't expect this many responses.

I've been using nice diamond stones that my grandfather has been trying to teach me on, all freehand. I only use those stones when I'm visiting with him, which isnt as often as I should be. He doesn't live very close.

Anyway, I would like to buy my own kit. I just would like to get these sharpened up quickly. I recieved an email from a member here who said he would sharpen themfor $5 plus shipping, and he sounds like he can put a nice edge on it.

Thanks for all the help guys.
