You're looking at what was a 1 1/2" x 2" x 8" "W" Feather Damascus billet, and a few pieces from my stag taper stash, along with what can be done with a slice of said billet and an Amber Stag taper.

Here's an 8 1/8 inch feather damascus Bowie blade; Amber Stag taper handle; 416 Stainless guard, file-worked accent spacers, filed-to-stag domed butt-cap; Damascus collar and finial.

It's off to Paul Long Monday for a suit of leather. (I'll add sheath pics next week.)

There'll be four more blades of different shapes to be gotten from this billet. What fun!

Lookin' good. Nice stash ya got there, buddy...now let's see what else comes out of it.

Jesus, the control in that damascus and the quality of the stag are giving me palpitations.

Beautiful piece, John--just marvelous.

Another beauty, John.

Every time that you post it makes me more anxious to see what you bring to Little Rock. [Unfortunately that's the only time that I get a chance to see your work up close.]

How about showing your feather dies? I need to get off my duff and make some one of these days.

Beautiful knife John with some amazing stag surrounding. Like Gary, I need to try my hand at the feather steel one of these days. Thanks for the shot of the dies.

Gary and Mike,

The wedge shape of the cutter was outlined for me by Dave Lisch ( thanks Dave).

The critical part is the exact geometry of the edge; too sharp cuts without drag-down, too blunt pulls straight lines.

I haven't got it quite to my satisfaction yet. Practice, practice, as Don H says...

Thanks, John.

It looks as if the top die goes from 1 1/2" to 1/4" in 4". Is that pretty close?

Do you normally make a typical "W" for your feather or is there something else that you prefer to use? Also, do you saw the feathered billet (after rewelding) to reduce the thickness and keep the end intact when making multiple blades from the same billet?

I appreciate your input.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary,

That's close, but you'll have to work out the exact cutting edge.( Mine's a bit closer to 3/16ths.)

I've done high count and low count "W's."

This one is a low count "W," but when I consolidated the three "W'd" billets, I added two layers of 15n20 between each "w" slab.

It's hard to describe without photos, but take a look at the blade. You can see the "W's" and the horizontal 15n20.

the pattern of the steels is tripping me out.
it makes me think of what it might look like when the earthquake underwater rends a gash in the earth, sucking the water into the crevasse...kinda apocalyptic.

John - that is just terrific, end to end. Congrats on the score of premium stag, and for putting it to such good use.

Super classy. Great shape, love the damascus, and ohhhh that stag! Can't wait to see what Paul cooks up and what the other knives shape up to be!

I love this beauty, John!
