A few bottle openers...
I know, a bottle can be opened with whatever you can find, a key, coin, paper, lighter and so on. Anyway, I wanted a dedicated bottle opener, easy to carry around, and with some added functionality.
I carried a rambler for quite a while, and that was great, plus it has that wonderful screwdriver which works with many screws, from very small to medium size. Perfect for opening a laptop, and works of such.
But i gave that to my wife, and put a classic on my keys, and wanted to try something else.
I have a Sears 4way and a P38 in my wallet, and they are very useful, but as i said, i needed a dedicated bottle opener.
Bought a True utility key tool, thought i hit the jack pot, a lot of functions in a package that wraps around a key, taking almost no extra space. What's not to like ?
Well...
There is. Opening the first bottle got me some nice hand bleeding punctures. The second bottle didn't, but i had to be careful with the leverage and positioning my fingers. And i didn't seem to like 'opening' the key every time i had to open the door.
Moving on.
Screw pop
This was nice, but a little bulky for my pocket. The sharp bottle cap corners will scratch the hell out of it, eating inside the alloy from which the thing is made.
It will last a long time though, but will not look nice.
Can be used as a punch tool, and has a nice addition in form of a double screwdriver. Not the best quality heat treated heads, but it works, as long as it's just from time to time.
Ring bottle opener. A toyish gadget, works nice for it's intended purpose, but as i'm not a teenager anymore, won't be carrying this on my finger expecting to open a bottle.
Can be worn on keys, but it's bulky. No added functions.
Leatherman carabiner.
For a carabiner, the added bottle opener is a nice touch, and will work as advertised. I like that one. Steel, uses of a carabiner, and bottle opener.
But i still wanted something else.
Bush key tool
O1 steel, bottle and can opener, screwdriver and pry bar, flint/ferro rod scrapper. This one was great. Really great. Had one problem though, rust. I don't mind carbon steel, i actually prefer it in my knives, and carry a peanut in CV most of the time.
But for a small tool on my keys, which only gets use from time to time, i didn't like to keep an extra eye for rust in my pockets. I can take care of a knife, but a bottle opener/screwdriver,..that is too much.
Still love the thing, but not for my keys. In a PSK maybe, in an outdoor bag, yes. But not for every day carry.
Pocket tool X Brewzer.
THis one is still on my keys, and it's not going anywhere. My ideal keychain bottle opener. Has a hex driver, a pry/screwdriver, and a notch under the tip,
to exert more force in a point, as in punching holes in tin cans and opening packs. The knife tip saver
It's small, strong, stainless, thick, well designed, and does what i need. Plus, it looks cool. The part before the screwdriver/tip is wide, for a good finger grip, as good as it gets with fingers that is.
Leatherman will continue to make the brewzer, as they bought PTX not long ago.
So that's it, for now, my search for a good keychain bottle opener has ended. It's been months since i bought it, and it's still there.
