I talked about some of the changes to my leather making in a previous thread - and I wanted to show you the changes here.

Here is a sheath I completed today using a type of English Bridle leather. This leather is drum dyed and hot finished with tallow. This makes the dye nearly perfect and very deep with a top coat of protection that should keep the sheath protected for years to come.

Another addition is the new thread that I am using. This is 1mm braided poly thread made in the same fashion as "Fire Wire" used in modern fishing lines. It have a very high breaking strength and can be had in nearly any color that you can imagine. I have it in black, tan, creme, and white.

I also have brought my stitching inside so that all processes (except for edge sanding) are done in a clean environment. This protects the sheath against accidental spills and contaminants.

I think this allows for some of the best materials and situations to make Diomedes Industries sheaths better than ever.

Here are a few more pictures.

Also - I am branching out a bit with new products in the DI line.

Here is my Slimline Bi-Fold Wallet. Two pouches for cards and money. This one is lined with pigskin and topped with 3 ounce premium leather from Wickett and Craig. It has a VERY small foot print and is perfect for those who like to carry a small wallet. This is hand sewn and finished and comes with the DI makers mark on the inside. Initials and carving would be very easy as well for a upcharge.

60 unlined and 80 lined.

Very nice TF! I really like the color of the sheath in contrast to the thread. That is sweet. :)

What is your preferred way to contact you for orders? I've got about a dozen FBs of all lengths I'd like sheaths for.

Dude, very nice work -- I'll be hitting you up shortly for some pants for a couple of new fiddlebacks as well!

Very cool folder wallet.

On using the drum dyed stuff .. I was under the impression you can not wet form that stuff.

All of my leather for the last few years has been drum dyed.

Bridle leather that is hot finished with tallow is more water resistant and thus will not wet form as easily. However, mine is split after being hot finished and thus the flesh side is much more open to letting water in. I case from the back and wet form it up! Then seal the inside.

It is more pliable than other methods of wet forming (such as with hot water to remove all natural oils - to sealing with hot bees wax) but it holds a shape and looks great for this application.

Gorgeous! Sheath and wallet. I especially like the wallet. Simple.

:)

Great work Tal! Now I know who to send all of the wallet requests to. Bridle leather is great stuff, it takes on it's own patina with age and use.

Fabulous! Is there no adverse effect on the steel from non veg tanned leather? I mean, I'm sure there isn't, but I'm confused as to why veg tanned is always recommended for carbon steel blades.

Love the wallet. I especially like how you photo bombed with that bald head. :D :p

Strig,

Another common type of tanning uses Chromium and other salts from chromium. This leather is more supple and less likely to deform when wet - but can have an adverse effect on many parts of high carbon steel knives. In some cases the makers of sheaths don't know what is in the tanning process of cheap or disreputable leather. This is why veg tanned leather is the best choice.

In short, salt is bad for metal and stuff. ;)

That's some mighty fine looking leather there, looking forward to seeing your continually refined work. Perfection is chased and never found :).

I just finished my second sheath (a small pocket piece) using Tandy product and I wouldn't call the raw product flawed, it just has substantially more, ummmm character :).

Cheers,
David

TF,

This is absolutely gorgeous. The beauty and simplicity of your sheaths are spot on. I would love to place an order. I just bought my first FB, and I'd love to pair it with one of these sheaths. I have a few questions regarding your different "patterns." How should I contact you to ask these q's and order? Thansk!

Any possibility you could make one with the card pockets on the outside and a wire or something to hold cash folded in half in the middle?
