A few good men and good khukuris. More pix from Major Mike.

I don't know what that stick did; but, I am sure the dead wood is scared stiff around that base camp.

Anyone think to send Major Mike Duvon's 4 page handout?

Gentlemen,

The 1st pix is what is available, i.e. not deployed/etc., of AOps company.

I sent the link to the Company Commander and the two respective Platoon Commanders. They get to comment on the pictures, when they get a chance.

It may take a few days aw we're kind of busy until at least Friday afternoon.

S/F, Mike

Short version is the Company Commander had a contest between the two Marines being awarded their Khukris. Who could chop through the 4X4 the quickest was the competition. I unfortunately did not have a previous best for the competition!

The Sgt. on the right side was in the lead for most of the competition but the Cpl. Won out in the end with a few well placed blows.

Neither listened much on their chopping tutorial so both attempted to chop with stiff wrists and no attempts to find the sweet spot. After the competition a quick demonstration of better technique brought the general response of “maybe we should have listened”. Sometimes the best learning comes from not doing it right.

Heh heh.

That was what my grandaddy used to say too. I used to get real frustrated that he seldom (if ever) showed me directly how to do something. Instead, he would watch me over my shoulder, grinning like a man who knows but wont say.

Real learning starts after you have found all possible ways to screw up... :D

Hmmm, the guy holding onto the wood in the last pic kinda reminds of the description of how Heber got his latest khuk scar. Maybe he only did that chopping away from the other hand. Maybe a couple of the "in stitches" pix should be forwarded too. Kinda like those old movies for driver's ed or shop safety. Some experiences, while genuinely educational, are best left un-experienced.
