A few hikes and testing some knives

I have been on a constant quest to find a folder that was a great EDC and equally a woods knife. A couple months ago I got an Emerson mini A100, and a Benchmade mini Bone Collector. (Both have 3" blades to remain within the murky LA knife laws) Though fixed blades are my main focus for the woods, a folder is what I use and carry every day. Both of these are excellent knives, and I really enjoy using them.

In general, the Emerson slightly edges out the BM as my favorite

The squared handle looks at first glance like it would be uncomfortable but it's actually great for extended use, and it can be held in many ways.

Nice and pointy for holes too

I also have been using the BHK and Spyderco bushcrafters for the past few months.

The Spydie is really amazing for wood cutting. And that handle is still one of the best I've ever held.

But I like the BHK a little better. The whole profile of it is perfect. My only complaint is that it's just a bit too handle heavy.

Great pics T, I like that little Emerson alot! Looks nice and simple! I may have to pick one up.

Great pics T...

The Emerson A100 is one of my favorite folders. Joe has one with a Scandi grind....Kinda hard to come by the A100 it seems. Everyplace is usualy on backorder for the PE version. Great blade though. That Benchmade is nice too.

Great pics buddy !

I'm not normally into folders but I'd love one of those Bone Collectors, it looks a really cool blade !

great pics T... nice selection of knives too... i dig that Emerson, i have been eyeing those lately...:D

i'm helping lead a 12 mi. hike tomorrow, for my son's 6th grade science class...should be cool.. though i have done this same trail 3o some odd times already...:)

Thanks guys

You're right J, I had tried to get an A100 online for quite a while with no luck. But I was able to get just the one I wanted at the Knife Expo show from Ernie himself. He's always great to talk with, like meeting a favorite rockstar :D

Cool pics tknife. I'm liking the looks of that bone collector. I prefer thumbholes to studs but also like the axis lock...hmmm.

NIce pics T! Is that A100 chisel ground? Also, cool T-shirt. I may have to bite the poser bullet and try to get me one of those.

I actually like the Emerson. I'd remove the clip though. Great pics!

Not really chisel ground, but it has the Emerson asymetrical grind. As I sharpen it I'm making it even on both sides though.

i was going through this thread and looking at the pics I am like... wait i think i know this place... :D :D :D then i checked who was posting the thread and it was you...

is this near rocky peak? you go out there a lot huh???

you should join us this sunday for our "Survival Hike" :D we could carpool if you'd like :D

It's nice having these great rocky hills surrounding me. Not Rocky peak, but all Santa Susanna mountains. Just down the street I have a perfect trailhead for quick hikes

Nice pics. I wasn't aware of that Bone Collector. I'll probably continue to stick with plain old FRN/VG-10 lockback Spydies, but it looks great.
Always figured a chisel grind like that Emerson would do pretty well working with wood, but don't you have to use it left-handed?

I like the Emerson as well. I hadn't seen that one before.

Mike, that is great and sounds like a lot of fun. I would be interested in knowing how it goes, as I would think getting 6th graders through a 12 miler would be tough. My son who is 9 and in the 4th grade regularly goes on longer hikes/trail runs with me, but NONE of his friends would be interested in that distance.

It's a standard grind on both sides, but the final edge bevel is ground differently on both sides, all Emersons that aren't chisel grinds are made that way. It cuts and slices like a regular edge, but on past Emersons I sharpen it like normal edge and they eventually even out.
