Hey folks, got a few new knives recently:
Top barlow is a Dasco out of Rockford Ill. This is a contract knife done sometime I believe in the late fifties. There's a bit of bone missing from the back of the front handle due to the fact that they seem to have cut the bone a bit close to the center pithy area, otherwise it's in great shape.

Second is a Keen Kutter toothpick with the obvious Schrade peachseed bone handles. This one, again, was available in the late fifties, or about the time that Schrade Walden was using this particular bone. It shows up in the 1959 Keen Kutter catalog.

Bottom of course is a Schrade Cut.Co daddy barlow which was a complete rust bucket when I got it. It cleaned up pretty well though, and seems to have never actually been used, although it must have been stored in a mighty damp basement.

All really traditional beauties Eric. The Daddy-B must be the one you mentioned you've been working on. How did you go through the rust removal process?

Thawk, yes it is. First I gave it an overnight soak in a container of Evapo-Rust, which does a great job of removing just the rust, and nothing else. I then gave it a good wipe down to remove the black crud, etc (cleaning inside the liners is the toughest part). I used a bit of Flitz for this process. Next I completely submerged it in mineral oil for about three hours, making sure that it got into every nook and cranny. After that another good wipe down with a clean rag, and there you are. There's some pitting on the bolsters and the blade, but I'd just as soon leave it and the patina in place rather than alter the entire knife with a buffer like some folks do.

Thanks Dave! You don't see many of them around.

Eric

I forgot about this one, I've posted it elsewhere but I don't recall posting it here. It's another contract knife, this time for Shapleigh Hardware.

Hey! Now that you mention it I see Fran's prints on it too! Hey guys, Rusty1, a fellow collector from another forum, and myself took a little trip to the Ellenville Flea Market yesterday, and Rusty cleaned up! I'm sure he'll post some pics when the lighting's just right:cool::D

Eric

Thanks Eric. I usually do not obtain rusty knives, but I know sometimes I see some that used to be rusty and end up looking pretty good (like yours). That Shapleigh cattle knife is a doozie with a nice etch!

Finally got to take pics this evening, Ellenville Flea Market came up trumps this last weekend, Eric definately pointed me in the right direction,:)

on top, 225OT with wood handles, that saw blade is something else!
to left, 77OT without the Improved Muskrat etch.
bottom right, Schrade open stock 708 model.
far right, another brown handled 897UH

Nice Russell, Thanks one heck of a shot! You sure did have the eagle eyes that day;) I still can't believe how you spied that 225!

Eric

Yeah, my Schradar was fully functional and firing on all cylinders. :D
