Interesting!

The Salt looks like a progrip-bladed delica handle.

The Scorpius shows that, once again, Spyderco emphasizes function over form. I'm sure some will be turned-off by the handle shape while others will recognize the funtionality of the shape.

Spyderco is never boring! :D

I'm firing an email off to SFO on friday to see when I can get a c87sbk. New swimming knife, even if I have to dry out the lock after(which is why the stainless dragonfly only went swimming a couple times)... Sal posted earlier about taking it diving and letting it just sit to dry. Virtually corrossion proof... everything has it's limits I'm sure. Make something idiot proof, and they'll find a better idiot.

Could make a nice 24/7 carry for a rotation on left/front(been carrying my ats-55/se/frn endura since early dec 02)... and I mean 24/7, after a neck rig it could go in the shower too.

I really like the Scorpius..very nice smooth flowing lines. The salt looks cool too. Do we have an ETA?
Matt

***edited to add: why do you need a blade in the shower anyway?

I don't understand the Scorpius? Could someone explain the approach on the handle shape? And if it's tactical, why have smooth ss handles (zero grip?)?

Matt> currently the only time I have my ss dragonfly off is when I'm in the shower. Thats more because it's a bit&#99h to dry out than anything. Whereas a knife that's designed for water use won't be as much concern about drying it out right away. I can give it a shake out and let the remaining water dry up through-out my day or drip out.

I take my frn/se cricket swimming now... last time it went swimming I didn't do anything more than shake it out, until I got home about 4-5hrs later and then I just sprayed it out all the way. No rust or anything when I took it apart to lube and smooth out last week.

The ss 'fly is great for moisture. I was sick the first week of the month, in bed for 2 days with a nice fever. Had it on still, under my shirt in the rig(pivot over the sternum, clip out, tip down). When I finally got around to moving and changing clothes, I looked at the 'fly and didn't have any rust or discolouration at all. Just gave it a lube job again on friday last week... had been about 2 months since it got anything done to it for lube/oil.

Ummm - I dont think I get the "Salt" - why not just make a Delica or a Rescue in H-1 steel, instead of making a slightly less pointy delica style in H-1? Not that I dont like it, I do - just, wondering.

I like the C88 except for one thing - if its supposed to be a weapon, dont make it in frigging stainless. If you stab and cut someone with it,y our hand will soon be covered in not only sweat, but their BLOOD - blood&sweat makes a GREAT lubricant as long as its kept wet enough (via more of the same) not to dry. Stainless-steel has the traction of a live fish dipped in motor oil - I.E. NONE. So, even with a somewhat retentive handle shape, your hand is going to come zinging off that thing in a fight.
First rule of handling tactical/defensive knives - TEXTURE + handle shape, not just handle shape. I like it, but I think its impractical as hell till it gets some G-10 slapped on it.

Does anyone else think the Scorpius should have been named the "Dolphin Head"? :)

I like the blade profile on the Salt much more than the Delica/Endura style.

I'm lukewarm about the Scorpius.

It seems that the model numbers in the descriptions don't jibe with the model numbers labeling the photos. I had to figure out to reverse them by considering the handle materials listed, and their descriptions.

I remember when Sal mentioned the forthcoming "H-1 Delica" in a recent thread about that steel, and I said I am very much eager for such a knife. I guess this one is it. I can say that I do like it, and I think it's a plus that the blade tip is not quite the fragile-seeming pointy design like the standard Delica.

The Scorpius will take time to grow on me, but I haven't ruled it out yet. More to the point, I have learned that I end up liking things I thought I'd never like, so I can't rule that the same won't happen with this knife.

So, now, where were the model numbers reversed -- on the descriptions or on the pics?

edited to add: Does anyone know if the Salt is user-disassemblable? (I don't mean warranty-wise. I mean is it riveted or are there torx screws or something that can be removed?)

I've found that even though the Native SS is stainless, the handle shape tends to lock your hand in and actually things are not as bad as it seems.
Perhaps the Scorpius handle is similar in that regard.

These models aren't in production yet... so go over to the Spyderco forum if you have any complaints and bug Sal. I for one don't understand the S.S. handles on the tactical knife either...

was the C88 designed by Warren Thomas? It reminds me of his newest...

standard

Nice call RL, they do look really similair. Waiting for someone with knowledge of this to chime in...

whoops. it seems i have jumped the gun on those. i may have leaked privledged info. those were developmental photos and spyderco wasn't ready to go public with. my apologies to spyderco. the knives are coming out but the photos were only intended to give us an idea of what they would look like.

i guess i had to be the jerk:footinmou

Is it just me, or does the hanlde of the Scorpius look an awful lot like that of the Dodo?
The Dodo's handle is immensely comfortable, so this could be a wonderful thing!

I like the new Spydies. I prefere the look of the Delicas blade tip better. But i can also see where the Salts rounder edge is appicable. It definatly looks less aggressive. Making work around Sheeple easier.

As for the Scorpion. Well i had issues with SS handles too. Then I slapped some skateboard tape on them and it worked out great. If the knife gets wet, or needs to be cleaned I just take of the tape. use some Goo-Gone on the remaining glue, and go on with the cleaning. Then appply fresh tape. I didn't even have to pay for the tape. Found it lying on the road. Course, since my knife budget is non existant. I only have cheap knives to test this fix on. But I guesse i'll just have to keep saving up for a Scorpion. I do feel kinda bad about doing anything to change a Spydie period though. :(
