I needed to get away from the chaos of home (oldest daughter, her boyfriend/fiancée, an “adopted” son, youngest daughter, and wife…all in the same small house) and find a quiet place to work for a few days. So I headed down to Desoto State Park and the Little River Canyon Just outside of Fort Payne Alabama. Thought I’d post a few pics while I’m waiting on the brightest part of the day to pass.

I stopped at Desoto Falls but it was early and the light was from the east so not many pics, I had meant to stop by this afternoon on my way out and get better pics but I left early this morning.

The deck at the Desoto lodge, and the view from it, this was my office for the afternoon after the Sunday lunch buffet, which by the way was awesome. The fried chicken was great and the peach cobbler dessert was fantastic!

The gear I took since I was traveling light, not exactly a spring chicken ya know. My thinking on the knife choices was firstly I light and tough, then I was thinking since this was Jeff’s neck of the woods that any officers and rangers I encountered would probably know him and it might be a good conversation piece. As for the Mick Spain knife it’s new to this country and I thought since I was going to Alabama I’d take it and show it what it was like to reeeeeeaally be in a foreign country :) So, it rode along in my shoulder bag.

Excellent pics, as usual, bro. How has the compass held up? I have tried a couple that I've borrowed, but I haven't had a single one long enough to determine whether or not it is what I want or not.

Great Pictures (again)
Thanks for sharing your trip

Just got a plant book,Wild Berries and Fruit (IL,IA,MO)and was reading about
what to look for in identifying plants.
Do you know what that one is?
In my book it resembles Autumn Olive or Northern Spicebush.
Its hard to ID from a picture.

Not too far from where I live. Gorgeous pics. Looks like a great time was had. That Mick Spain is stunning!

Thanks man, it's holding up just fine. It's been tossed around and carried around in a pocket on my shoulder bag and for months and carried in my shirt pocket in the field quite a few times. I'm really happy with it so for, winter will tell the rest of the tale.

Well, I'm not sure yet what it is yet. I took the pics so I could research it and see what it is but it's definitely not Autumn Olive. These are close-up shots of Autumn Olive, we have a LOT of it here.

Amazing spot and awesome pics as always....what a great place to get away from it all !

It's getting to be that time of year. I can't hike much any more due to back/leg problems, but have got to get to Buck's Pocket and to make the Cheaha drive soon.
