I got out to the hills again today.

I did some hiking around, and IDd some plants and trees and built a couple figure 4s.

My camera battery died almost immeadiatly, but I did snap a few pics....

Im sure some of you guys know this, but one of my favorite berries is in season. The Autumn Olive. An invasive species, but man are those little berries good. I harvested a half gallon to bring home to my boys. They love em too. Much higher in lycopene then the tomato, they are a very nutritious lil fruit. They grow almost anywhere in the east to the south, and over to Kansas. Berries are red and juicy with a small seed. Taste like a cross between a cherry and a cranberry to me. Alternate leaves, silvery bark, and the undersides of the leaves are silvery too.

So if youre out roamin and come across some of these, nab a few. Yummy stuff.

After those I lost camera. :o

Managed to get one pic before I started building a couple figure 4s...Used the Gunny and my Opinel folding saw. If you dont have one of these saws, you should look into one. Handy, and sharp.

Dig 'em, J.
Those autumn olives stick out like a sore thumb this time of year don't they?
Pretty trees even if they are invasive.
You gotta let me try that opi saw sometime. I like that!

Yeah they do....Nice lookin tree. I hear they make good wine. Might have to make a batch someday.

That saw is cool man. Its always in my pack so Ill let ya give er a try next time were out.

Hopefully this weekend if you can, and the slicer man gets the go ahead from his mommy. :D

Good stuff Jake. I am not sure if we have Autumn Olive by me. I am going to have to look it up.

Thanks brothas...

Tony Im sure you guys have em....I looked in my peterson wild edible book for eastern/central north america, and couldnt fine em.

I always wanted one of those Opinel saws, the look great. And why is it that camera batteries do that?! I think it's charged, then it dies after a few pics.

Good stuff Brother.... Autumn olive is great.... It is the easiest friction fire wood I've ever used besides yucca,

I don't think I've ever seen those in Tn before. I'll have to look harder. What elevation do they grow in? Or does it matter? That opinel saw is awesome, I wish I still had mine. I got a couple of Op folders. Great stuff, thank you for sharing. Moose

Thats sweet! Never knew. I'll have to watch for them.

Cool pics Jake. We have a lot of Autumn Olive here...pics of them in the last three or four hikes of done.

Thanks guys!!

The Opi saw is awesome. It locks up solid, and doesnt rattle or anything. Ive heard of the wood handles swelling if its wet, but Ive had that thing for a year now and it lives in my pack. Never had any issues with it. Ive thought about sanding it, and soaking it in linseed, but if it aint broke!! lol...

Id be happy to snap some more pics of it, and do a review of sorts.

Cool pics J.

Hey, I took that bike trip on the Katy trail , Boonville to Rochport. Found a huge Arch cave in the bluff. Looks like there were other caves that I did not check out.Im thinking of doing Rochport to Columbia next.

Thats awesome man! Its a great ride isnt it? I like the wide open farmland transition into bluffs/river....You are right....There is a ton of caves through there. Wouldnt be suprised at all if some train robbers from once upon a time utilized em.

Ive never ventured off trail except for the little conservation area before you get to the bluffs....Did you get a chance to explore any of the caves?

When you get throught the train tunnel, if you hike that steep trail up the bluff there is a really cool overlook at the top that you can see forever from.
