I ran across these images while searching for pictures of old British uniforms. I thought they might be of interest here.

Very informative, and as Ted pointed out, Thompson's & Khuk's...thats what a call a perfect partnership. :D

As far as the uniforms go, my personal choice would be the summer issue slouch hat and short pants. ;)

GREAT images...

I'm intimidated and I know that they are only drawings and that I live in Wisconsin, which is hardly ever in a conflict which involves Gurkhas.

For one of the best books you will ever read, get:
"Quartered Safe Out Here"
By George Mcdonald Fraisier
He was in 9 Section, B Company, 9th Battalion (Bn) in the Indian 17th Infantry Division. they were called the Black Cat Division for the unit flashes they wore. He discusses the Gurkha units he was near/with. Good book.

Great pictures, thank you

That book should be a movie, but no one would be able to get it filmed. Too honest to the time and the situation. Don't forget his "Flashman" series too.

Great pics. I have always gotten a kick out of how jovial the Gurkhas are known to be...until the battle starts.

That has to be a bad guy's worse nightmare. A tiny ox of a man chiseled like stone with a barking Thomson and a foot long knife gleaming and flashing in the night.

note the way their shoe laces are laced, tis told that ghurkah patrols in ww2 could sneak up on someone encountered in their patrolling, and check the way their shoelaces were tied without them noticing, if not tied in the approved british army fashion, ZIP - off with their heads...and you thought you had a tough drill instructor. you WILL tie your shoes like everyone else or...

- probably just a story, just like the old gotta blood the blade if drawn thing that still shows up in gurkha articles...

Did anyone else notice the bottom fellow has an empty bayonet frog on his belt?

Curious that he would have an unnecessary piece to have to lug around.

Could also be one of those things that was part of the uniform and you were to carry it whether or not you were issued a bayonet (which you wouldn't be if issued a Thompson).

Cool pictures.

yup, supply clerk hands out "belt with bayonet frog, one each, stock no 123-334a - sign here please". (supply clerks of course do not issue weapons)

platoon then marches briskly to the armoury where he was issued his thompson (and no bayonet).

"sarge, if i have a thompson, why do i need a bayonet frog?"

"shaddap gupta, if the army issues you a bayonet frog, you wears yer bayonet frog, now give me 50"
