A few questions (possibly stupid...) about Strder-style handle wrap.

Recently I obtained a knife with a set of holes in the handle really close to the one on strider handle. So I decided to experiment abit with their way of wrapping a hande. Still I have couple of qestions about this process.
1) What kind of cord would be better -- flat (like shoelases) or thick paracord-like? Thicker or thinner one?
2) http://www.striderknives.com/html/handlewrapping.html
Step 5. What do you do with the end of cord?
Thanks beforehand!

I think that a "full" cord versus a "flat" or "gutted" cord is one of personal preference.

Go with the subjective feel that you like. :)

From reliable sources, supposedly, Paracord shrinks as it dries -- some thus prefer to wrap wet, allowing natural shrinkage plus an originally already tight wrapping to really snug up the handle-wrap, making even individual strands un-movable.

As to sealing the ends?

Burning/melting is a favorite for Paracord, and with enough practice, this can even be done very, very cleanly. However, if you favor using other materials, you should give them a test-burn before you commit, as some can produce rather nasty looking ends. Also, "SuperGlue" is a preferred sealing agent, too.

:)

Hope this helps!

Thanks Burchtree and Pyton357ru for raising the question and for providing the information. Its threads like this that make it worthwhile to browse BF. I was wondering about handle wraps too.

in step 5, you just tuck that end of the gutted cord under itself. use a drop of krazy glue to hold it in place when you're doing the rest of the wrap. once the outer wrap is over it, that inner shell isn't going anywhere.

i really like using 550 cord. i suggest you try that out before shoelaces.

it helps a lot to clamp the blade in place with vice clamps, if you've got em'.

and i've heard that when you're finished, you can boil the handle and all in water for a few minutes, which should cause the paracord to shrink up. i'm not sure this is true, since the cord is nylon?

keep us posted, hope this helps.

Concerning wrapping wet or boiling.... what about rusting?

I had thought about maybe dampening the paracord and then once wrapped applying a hair dryer to tighten it up and dry it out to prevent rust...

Maybe if using the hirdryer no dampening would be needed as the heat would cause the nylon to "shrink" up anyway, thus avoiding any rusting problems....?????

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks! Still overseas order would be abit over the top...

BTW.
After a few experiments, I suggest against Strider-style wraping on narrow-handled knives. Grip turns into somthing barrel-like...

hello
please tape up the edge of the knife before wrapping
i gave myself 4 stitches this way :D

Maybe not direct taping, but wrap the blade( couple of times) with paper and fix it with scotch. Safe, and no need to clean the glue from the blade...
