While looking at your collection, ever notice that if you grip one piece for a few minutes, the other knives grips' feel more comfortable?

Also, does anyone really care about a black coating on a knife? I have two ceramic coated knives and rarely notice them, I don't think of them as "Tactical" or anything.

Anyone else feel the same?

Well, IMHO they look cool and tactical for about a minute, until you actually use the blade for something. Personally, I don't like blade coatings much. I went so far as to remove the coating on my CS Bush Ranger since it looked so bad after a while. I haven't had any rust problems since removing the coat, so I don't really see the point of them.

Forgot about your first question... yeah, the one piece you're referring to is the knife I finished from one of Bob Engnath's blades. I've held bricks that felt more comfortable in my hand. Everything else I own feels better in my hand after that one!

Well, okay, it's not THAT bad...but I'm working on it. I'll probably end up sanding that thing down to the metal before I'm done with it, though.

Black blades=passing fancy (for me).
There's always one that is more comfy thatn the rest of the gang, mine is my Livesay US Marshall...
Ryan, how did you remove the black coating on your CS Bush Ranger? My Recon scout would be much pertier all shiney...

Heck I just like diggin' them all out and playing with all of them! I could start my on confetti business the way I slice up paper all the time, the wife just hates that...

But I do pick up after myself.

Black blades? My M2 AFCK is coated black, don't really care for the black blade myself, but that's the only way they sell them since they could be prone to rust. I've cut some stuff with it and it's held up pretty good so far. The coating on the Recon Tanto I had didn't hold up as well, but I think that's a different process that Cold Steel uses?

Like the Satin finish best, a hand rub finish is hard to beat.

Ebbtide,

Dremel! I have the variable speed model that came with a billion little attachments. The one that works best on removing the coating, if I remember correctly, was the brown cone shaped stone. The flats remove the coating pretty quickly and the point is good for getting into corners. Makes lots of pretty sparks, too!

You should have seen the look on my wife's face when she came home to find me in the kitchen wearing goggles, a dust mask and with sparks flying all over the place!

You'd think she'd be used to it by now!

Oh, one word of warning... if you want a nice finish on the blade you'll probably need to hand finish it after removing the coating, especially with the marks the Dremel leaves. You might want to use a less harsh attachment than the stone to make this easier.

I am not a fan of coatings, but if you are you'd best jump on these limited edition offerings from Allen Elishewitz's Website. Now that is what I call Tactical!

James, thanks for the link. We gotta hang out one day. My Busse's would be a good comparison to the Reeve line.

Guess I'm in the minority here but I like most blade coatings. When the handle is black (preferably aluminum) and the blade is black coated, the knife just looks right to me. I don't like coatings on all my knives, but a lot. I suppose part of that is that I don't like the finish on most production knives. I like the blade to have no grinding marks at all. They bug me. It's so hard to find production knives without those little lines. Just my opinion.

Thanx Ryan, I like the visual... goggles, dust mask & SPARKS!
I thought you were going to say something like "scotchbright" or "steel wool"
I wonder if it is too late to ask for a dremel for Christmas?!
