A Few Questions

1.) Does anyone have the current status on the Barong project? Last I read a wooden model was being made.

2.) Does a "fuller" actually make a blade lighter?

3.) I recall reading that the HI Tarwar is heavier and thicker than the HI Katana. Could a lighter, quicker, Tarwar be made with a thinner and/or "fullered" blade or would this be inadviseable because of strength or other considerations?

I'm (still) looking for a good (ie "user quality") sword to use within the framework of the FMA system that I study. The Tarwar's length fits, but might be a little heavy.

Thanks.

Hi Dave,
I can only comment on the second question, the one about fullers. The simple answer is, yes. Given two blades, one fullered one not fullered, of identical width length and thickness the fullered blade would be lighter.

Dave as far as I know Ray is still working on the Barong model.
It sometimes takes longer than we want when building models because every once in a while we have to start over or other time restaints gets in the way.
And that's the holdup on the HI 'Hawk and Bowie knife.
The models will be ready when it's time or in it's time.

A fuller not only makes a blade lighter, but also stronger as well.
A fuller works on the same principle an I-beam works on in which thinner pieces of steel can be made stiffer.

In order to get a tarwar made with a fuller a model would probably be needed since that's the only way the kamis can understand our
concepts.
Uncle Bill and Jim March remarked on Pala's drawings when the katana was first concieved of.
Pala's drawings looked odd to both Uncle Bill and Jim IIRC.
Jim graciously consented to send his old katana to BirGhorka for a model since it wasn't worh restoreing IIRC.

I don't recall the weight of the Tarwar, but I believe it was around 2 - 2-1/2 Lbs. When Uncle Bill gets here he will be able to tell you if a thinner, lighter one could be made.

HTH.

Thanks for the info on the fullers guys.

I can appreciate the time constraints problem. Don't you hate it when real life interferes with your fun though?

I only asked because I hadn't seen a recent update. If the Barong project is still a go, maybe I'll sit tight to see the final product.

On the other hand, I'm still interested to know if a "Tarwar Lite" (with a thinner/fullered blade) is possible.

Thanks again!

Dave.

If I end up doing this, I'll need to find someone to make a model. If I make the model, the kamis will be wondering why anyone would want a hand-forged spatula.

Thanks!
