Hey everybody. Been around the gun community for a while, but just getting into the knife and sharpening hobby. My first "nice" knife was this Ferrum Forge "Gent", ordered from Massdrop, a few weeks ago (Ti linerlock flipper, carbon, S35VN, 3"). Then I fell down the rabbit hole, watching a bunch of videos on YouTube, especially Michael Christy's channel, and started nerding out on all the different knife steels. The alloying to achieve the desired properties is fascinating. I really started liking Spyderco after watching a lot of videos on their knives, and decided to order my first one - a Military, in the Rex45 high-speed tool steel blade. I was really impressed with Big Brown Bear's edge stability comparison test that he did between 2 Spyderco PM2s - one in Rex45 and the other in M4, in which the Rex45 model beat the M4 model. Really impressive how the Rex45 knife barely had any damage to the edge after that abuse! Most of us will never subject our blades to something like that, but just serves to prove that, with normal use, these incredible, modern, powder-metallurgy blades will last lifetimes!
Then, I heard of the Opinel, and how it's inexpensive but still good, and ordered 3 - 2 #9s and a #8. For like 15 bucks each, with a pouch, they are an amazing deal! The #8 will go to my girlfriend, one of the #9s to my brother-in-law, who's a knife aficionado, and I'll keep the other one. If you look closely at the one in the photo, it has a faint rust spot on it, near the tip, that was there when I got it.
I've had the Military for a few days, and I've enjoyed learning to do the "Spydie Flick". At first, the action was a little tight, but with a drop of oil in the pivot and flicking it open a lot, it's loosened to the point where it almost flies out! The factory edge on it is notable also; it's the sharpest I've ever experienced on any knife!
Photos taken on my desk, with an iPhone 6S, with natural light coming in through a window.
