A Few stupid ?'s From an Upstart

Howdy all. I've only recently discovered the wonderful world of Busse's. It didn't taken me long to figure out that there's a lot to figure out. I've done my best to try and learn as much as I can in a short time, and avoid asking stupid questions. I know they say there's no stupid questions, but my Martial Arts teacher begs to differ. The addage in our school is try something and work on it a long time before asking about it. So obviously there's a lot to learn around here, and I just wanted to clarify that I've look around and tried to figure out most of my curiosities on my own. But, I still have a few questions that I can't find answers to on my own, so I was hoping to some of y'all could indulge.

1) I'm mostly concerned at this moment with FBM questions, as I have but mere days to place my order. Do the standard handles in the FBM have a swell in them? Are they shaped just like magnums only thinner? I have a Battle Rat for comparision. Could someone tell me if the handle thickness of my BR is the same as standard's for the FBM. If they're the same, the BR feels a little narrow for me, and I would in turn order mags. Testimonials?

2) What does "double cut" mean?

3) Can Stealth Hawks be sharpened at home? Mine's unused. The debate in my head goes: the factory sharpened it like it's suppossed to be; yeah but my Sharpmaker could put a razor edge on that; etc.

4)Are all Busse's post 2003 full convex edges, and no longer asymetrical?

5)Any way to know if any FBM's will wind up in the store? Not that history would dictate, but would it only be after the last round of orders if they did (12-18 wks according to Laura at Busse)?

6)Do micarta handles go from softer to harder going from paper, to linen, to canvas, to G-10? Why would anyone want the harder ones over soft? They're less comfortable, right? Why have em? Are there even paper micarta options, no right?

1. the standards on my heavy heart have a slight palm swell, even so, with my medium sized hands the magnums feel great. they are probably thinner than your br, i would reccomend the mags.

2. kind of like a bead blast finish in appearance, dont remember the technical details, someone else can probably answer better.

3.you should be able to sharpen the stealth, dont know if the sharpmaker would work, the polymer might gum up the stones. try fine grit emory paper.

4. my no-e is assymetrical, and i believe was made in 04 or 05.

This picture shows regular (black paper) and magnum (tiger hide canvas) Fusions on HOFSH models:

FOB,
Welcome to the Busse forum, I'm glad that you stopped by. I'll do my best to answer some of your questions

1)If the BR is a little thin in the handle I'd go for the Magnum's. If the BR handle fit you perfect I'd suggest the standard scales for the FBM.

2) It is the type of blade finish, it looks grey in pictures but it is actually bead blast and then bead blast again with a different media to "close" the surface a little. It is a nice finish both visually and for wear.

3) I believe that Stealth Hawks can be resharpened, but I think that you'd need to use sandpaper. Check with the shop on how to best do that.

4)I believe they switched to convex edges prior to sending out the Desert Ergo series. Some of the other ergo's may also have convex edges. Everything after the Desert Ergo's do have convex edges. I'm sorry I don't remember what year exactly.

5)I'm sure that Scott ordered FBM's for the store, however, there is no way to guess what demand there will be for them when they make it to the store. If there is a high demand they may not last long there. My guess (this is just my opinion) is that you'll have a little window in which you could buy one from the store if you miss them off the website.

6)Micarta doesn't really change in "softness" or "hardness" from one micarta to the other. It has more to do with durability. Canvas micarta is the toughest, most durable for all conditions and slightly more "grippy". Linen and paper micarta are slightly less durable and slightly less "grippy". However, that being said, I wouldn't hesitate to use the paper or linen for hard use. I seriously doubt for the average user that they will ever be able to tell any difference in toughness and because of the patterns that Busse uses for their handles I doubt there will ever be any "grip" issue.
As far as softness goes if you were blindfolded and handed linen, paper, and canvas micarta you couldn't tell the difference

I hope that helps

and remember, the www.bussecompanystore.com will have fbm's in stock if you happen to miss out on the initial offer.

I guess noone would know when the Co. store order will get finished right? Is it likely that they'll put into the store when that order's complete, or after the last orders get filled in 3-4 months, following their rotation off of "taking orders status"?

So G-10 would be the least "gripyest" (is that a word)?

You will not find INFI dimples on DC finish

G10 is actually my favorite Busse handle material right now. I really like the Green G10 that I have on my FSH Variant. Since Busse uses the same textured pattern on the G10 that they use on their micarta handles I doubt that you'd be able to tell a difference just by feel.

did I mention that your JASHBM and My two JASHBM's are from the original batch of 1 of 300. :D :D

I'm glad that you reminded me about this, you mentioned it at Blade, however you didn't mention that you were having yours made with G10 ;)

I honestly did not care what handles they came with, but Jerry indicated that they were G10 and they do feel good.

I agree about the softness issue. Yes, I think that canvas and linen both feel pretty close., while G10 and paper micarta are comparable.
It's really just a matter of preference.
I have a Hell Razor with G10 handles, and since it is harder, the ridges are noticably sharper, and thus grippier, where as the canvas seems to be a bit rounder. It's all just a matter of preference. It's been said that the G10 is much more resistance to chipping and breaking, but micarta is stuff as tough as just about anyone would ever need.
