So Ive been larking around here for a while, posted a few comments and read all the great reviews. Im pretty sure Ive decided on the Tomcat 3.0... It looks great, and seems to be a favorite among many... I was wondering how many people actually use the Tomcat for EDC and overall if it feels really bulky or not. Ive been to a few places around here near Monterey California trying to get a feel for one, but no one seems to carry it...unfortunatley Im being restationed within the next few weeks for the military and I honestly am too anxious to wait on one to get shipped to my house and also fear it might be delayed while being shipped and we might have moved by then. Any similar knife recommendations would be greatly appreciated and also any comments about this great looking knife.
Thanks in advance
-Will

I have a tomcat 3.0. You can read my first impressions of it here.

I love the knife. It is a little big for everyday carry, and it doesn't actually have a pocket clip, but comes with a nice nylon pouch for belt carry.

I like to use mine when going on hike or a situation where a good knife is needed but a fixed blade is a little bit overkill.

I don't find it bulky. It fits the hand nice and cuts amazingly well for a knife with such a thick blade.

All in all I would easily say that the Tomcat 3.0 is my favorite folding knife.

Take a look at the Vulcan. It is a big knife. It has the pocket clip and is about the same size as the Tomcat. (I don't have a Tomcat.) Razor sharp. I just got mine and took it with me on a job in NC. I'm not used to such a large pocket knife. Looks like you should probably use the clip on this one. This knife is not an assisted opener. But with a little practice and a slight flick of the wrist, the blade just slides open effortlessly. Sportsman's Warehouse stores carry it, but at about $10 more that you pay on line including postage.

Thanks for the info guys, mrskillz your review is what really hooked me on the knife to begin with, thanks for the great pics and info on it. I really do favor the clip of the Vulcan, but I love the handle on the Tomcat...I wish there was somewhere around here I could physically hold the two and feel the difference. The closest Sportsman's Warehouse is like a 4 hour or more drive...they are opening an REI here but it seems they only carry Spiderco, Buck and BM. Anyways I guess I might have to wait until after we move. Do you think you might be able to take some pics of the vulcan for me similar to mrskillz review? Thanks again for the info and advice...

Edit* I found some pics of the vulcan on here that are pretty good. Would you say that the handle is a good grip..not too slipperey and not too ruff?

The vulcan handles are a hard plastic with elevated scales (pattern bumps) for grip. The handles aren't too rough to touch. I don't think it will be slippery unless it is covered in something slimy like blood. I don't have large hands (kind of medium) and it fits my hands perfectly. I usually take the clips off my knives, but this is one to keep the clip on. It is not supplied with a belt sheath. At first I felt the clip gets in the way when holding it, but after playing around with it, it's okay. The thing is really sharp from the factory. Slices a letter open like it is not even there. How's that for a test? :) I first looked at them at the Blade Show in Atlanta in June and I was waiting for my usual knife dealer to have them in stock. I quit waiting when I handled it again at Sportsman's Warehouse. They told me there that they had just got those in and were selling very well. After mine, they were down to one left.

I think you will like the knife. It doesn't feel as heavy as the Tomcat. I would have to look at the specs to be sure. Worst that will happen is that you send it back to the dealer if you buy it.

Sounds like your pleased with it, I might have to give it a go. Thanks again for the responses....I will definitley let yall know which one I end up getting!

Well guys I decided, and ordered a Tomcat 3.0 today...I ordered it from knifecenter since they seemed to have the cheapest price..I opted for the 2-day shipping, but Im not sure they have it in stock right now. Ive got my fingers crossed though, and hopefully I will see a box waiting for me before Friday.

Awesome! I know you will be very pleased with it .
Make sure you give a little write up on your first impressions of the knife ;)

I will, are those your youtube videos I saw? If so, you really make the tomcat seem even more appealing. I seen another video by someone else of the flash 2 batoning some wood and am very pleased with my decision to go with a Sog.. Hopefully it will be here before Friday so I can take some pics and put them up here.

The Tomcat III is a good choice. I usually buy from New Graham and last I checked they have them in stock. The Vulcan is another matter. NG is usually with a few dollars of the Knifecenter in pricing and they have very good service. Hope you enjoy the Tomcat III. I'd like to get one too, but it is not high on my priority list at the moment. Have a revolver on layaway that is getting my extra cash at the moment.

I just visited Grand Prairie Knives today and picked up a Vulcan. They were out of the Tomcat III's, but I"ll get one when they are back in stock. So far I love the Vulcan and I'm looking forward to picking up a Tomcat soon.

Yeah, those probably are my Youtube vids. I'm pretty sure they're the only ones of the Tomcat on youtube. If the username is similar to my BF username, then it's definitely me. I'm glad you enjoyed them!

Update-So after I placed my order, i recieved an email saying unfortunatley my knife was out of stock and I would have to wait a bit longer. Since Im about to move , I gave knifecenter a call, and my call was immediatley answered. I explained my situation, and the customer service rep asked me if I could hold on for a second, Sure enough I did, and he went and found me the last Tomcat they had. I guess someone else had ordered it and their credit card was denied. He told me not to worry and to expect my new knife on Friday. As I was literally hanging up the phone, I recieved all of my confirmation numbers and tracking number in my email. In the past two days, Ive been anxiously tracking my knife as it has made its way a cross the country. As of 3am this morning, my tomcat was leaving San Fran on its way to my house near Monterey. So thanks to Knifecenter and their great service it should be here within the next few hours. I strongly recommend ordering from knifecenter and am amazed at how well I was treated.

I will post my review just as soon as I get out of work tonight.

-"Holy sh*t thats a big knife."
So I opened my knife and was immediatley captivated by the huge blade. This thing is sharp! It fits nicely into my hand, despite its size, and has the fierce look to scare a bear away. For a folder, this thing looks like a monster. I tested the blade out first by slicing a piece of cardboard. Secondly, I grabbed a soda can, and the knife slid through like warm butter. I then grabbed an unopened letter sitting on my counter and carefully sliced upon the envelope with no problem at all. Then I had to go back to work, so I popped the knife into my BDU's pocket and let it relax in there for a few hours. It felt a little big in my pocket, but not to much different than the Crkt I normally carry. I wont have a problem carrying it in a cargo pocket later on.I showed one of my friends at work, who replied "Holy Sh*t thats a big knife." He normally carrys a benchmade or kershaw I think. And lastly tonight I made lemonade and tested my knife out on the lemons. It left a very pleasing, clean cut without mutalating the lemons.

Overall: BUY THIS KNIFE, you wont be dissapointed. I cant believe how sharp, out of the box, this thing is. Im pretty sure it turns my wife on too, since she cant seem to let it sit on the table for more than 5 minutes at a time. ;)
