This was one of my main projects for the day today. Got a SARsquatch in from a forum member with the request to make it a satin finish while removing factory dimples/machining and also installing removeable fasteners.

First up I drilled out the flared tube fasteners

Here's a few shots without the scales on so you can see the overall good but used condition.

Next I counterbored the holes in the scales and installed some stainless steel threaded standoffs w/ some T-25 stainless steel torx bolts. Sweet now we can go full satin!

Here is the final product at 220 grit (it will be used) convex ground to zero. I also freshened up the scales w/ a bead blast while I was at it, then put some grease under the scales to prevent corrosion from any future trapped water, and finally blue lock tite on the bolts. It's ready for use!

That's my baby Squatch!

Thanks Josh...just like what I pictured in my dreams...she can't fly to TN FAST ENOUGH!!!

That looks awesome Josh. I want to get one of mine to you shortly. What material were the grips that you blasted? They look like black G10 before the blast and Grey (like black canvas micarta) after the blast? Did they actually turn the Black G10 to gray?

Thanks!

I'll take this one, Josh...

Looks damn good.

I didn't realize you were doing convex grinds. I'll definitely need to send more blades your way.

Looks like black linen micarta I believe, which is awesome.

That looks great Josh, excellent work!

That looks line linen micarta to me. Wish it was still an option.

No thank you my friend, was a fun project ;) Good thing was that I was able to measure the tube fasteners when I took them out and they look to be in the .030-.035" thick range w/ an OD of 1/4", so that helps me a lot as I will have other projects in the future I will need to re-flare new tubing for scales (I got some nickel tubing to these specs which I understand Busse is now using). Some of this pitting was deep though! Turned out great, love to see some action shots. You put a super sweet convex edge on it already so great job!

This thing has obviously been used and had a lot of finger oils and such on the scales which made them almost look black... the blast removed all that back to the natural micarta underneath the oil =) Looks to be this stuff w/ the milling and contouring Busse did revealing the different colors.

Looks damn good.

Thanks dude, yeah I can do convex, flat, or hollow!

Also, for you traditionalist HOGS...

If those fasteners insult your sensibilities,

Josh told me he can go back with flared tubes that match with the factory ones <nickel, IIRC>...

Since I had requested for the tang to be fully satined which required the handle to be removed, I figured I'd convert it over to Torx while he had it off--

because every now & then I like to check under the hood! ;)

edit: looks like Josh & I were posting at the same time, sorry if it looks like I'm restating the obvious about the flared tubes! :o

Looks real nice. Fantastic work. Makes me sad I sold all my squatches. That black linen looks great freshened up. I never thought of bead blasting them for that new slab look. Man it looks nice!

Thanks, I can't wait to take receipt of her....:D

kinda reminds me of a topographical contour map...but it won't stay, I'll have it patina'd over with grime again before summer...NO REGRETS!

Thats a beautiful knife. You did a great job. I have always loved this knife style. I got one in great condition from the forum last year. I love it. One of the most interesting knife designs and you did it fine justice. Great work breathing new life into a classic blade. She looks as nice as the say she was born.
