hello everyone!

my wife and I homeschool and with summer approaching we decided that we were going to get out and enjoy nature with the kids.

my wife suggested we get them each a pair of field glasses and a navigation compass.

Have you all any suggestions for a first pair of binoculars? They dont need to be the best but I'd like to not worry about drops and kids being kids.

Thanks!

If $100-150 is ok, i’d go Nikon ‘all-terrain’ waterproof 7x35 or so. Don’t go too high on the magnification, 7x or 8x is plenty, and not too much shake when used hand-held.

I don't know the binocular market, so I can't make a recommendation. Your post just reminded me of my parents giving me a set of Bushnell binoculars when I was around 12-13. They were 7x35. It was one of the best gifts they ever gave me. It was like having super powers. :)

I no longer have them. They saw so much use (mostly camping), and got banged around a lot, they were pretty beat up and worn out. I inherited a more modern, and very compact set (Vivitar) that are much easier to carry, so I gave up the old pair of Bushnells.

I guess I'd recommend something compact, and light, as they are easier to carry, and a kid might be more likely to want to carry them around. My Bushnells were kinda bulky and cumbersome.

And make sure to tell them not to lose the lens caps. I failed in that regard 😁.

These came highly recommended by a family member who’s into birding, they sell a monocular too:

kids are 5 and 7. thanks!
For children that young, I suggest plastic real binoculars (not toys) designed to be used by children. Make $35 your outer limit, and here are three to begin your search:

Thinkpeak Binoculars for Kids (8x21)
Kidwinz Kids Binoculars (8x21)
OBUBY Real Binoculars for Kids

Amazon gives a competitive discount on most of these, and returns are easy if you have a Whole Foods in convenient driving range.

You need to make sure you get binoculars that can accommodate the correct pupillary distance for the kids, which is going to be pretty short/narrow. This generally means binoculars made specifically for youth, or getting pocket/compact binos.

Plastic ones made for kids would be the best choice
